OLEAN, N.Y. - The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team lost a road non-conference match Sunday at St. Bonaventure University, 6-1.

The loss drops The Rock's record to 2-2 on the year overall while the Bonnies, a Division I program that competes out of the Atlantic 10, improves to 4-6. Both of SRU's losses this season have come against Division I competition in St. Bonaventure and Bowling Green State University.

SRU avoided a shutout thanks to true freshman Nicole Kempton's victory in the fifth singles flight. Kempton has enjoyed a great rookie campaign so far with five victories in her first seven collegiate matches.

The Rock and Bonnies opened the contest trading 6-2 doubles wins as SBU's Anastasia Gubanova and Isabella Venter bettered Kempton and Amaia Balaguer Brau out of the first flight only for SRU to respond courtesy of a third-flight triumph by Nuria Martin Lopez and Gabriela del Val del Toro against Sienna Smith and Kelly Barnes.

However, St. Bonaventure captured the team doubles point following a 6-1 victory for Cirkeline Lundberg and Abbie Tyler over Tina Slovak and Dari Sakhanova in the second flight.

The Bonnies proceeded to take the first four singles decisions of the match to clinch the team victory.

Tyler opened the singles success for SBU by way of a 6-2, 6-2 win in the fourth flight over Martin Lopez followed by a 7-6, 6-2 victory by Gubanova against del Val del Toro at No. 2 singles.

A close 7-5, 6-4 result out of the first flight in favor of the Bonnies' Lundberg against Balaguer Brau then sealed the team victory for Saint Bonaventure.

With the team decision already decided, the day finished with Venter outlasting Sakhanova in third-flight action 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 as well as Kempton downing Smith 6-3, 3-0 (retired) and Barnes closing out the day with a 6-3, 7-5 sixth-flight victory against Georgie Lancaster.

Slippery Rock returns to Division II competition when it hosts Ashland University 6:30 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Oxford Athletic Club in Wexford, Pennsylvania. SRU earned a 6-1 road victory over the Eagles a season ago.
