COACHING MATCHUP
Slippery Rock head coach Shawn Lutz is in his 29th overall year at The Rock and his ninth year (eighth season) as head coach, where he owns an 81-20 record with five PSAC West titles and six trips to the NCAA playoffs. Lutz was the PSAC West Coach of the Year in 2018, 2019 and 2023 and was the Don Hansen Football Gazette Division II National Coach of the Year in 2019. The 81 wins are the most among all PSAC head coaches since the 2016 season. Lutz was an assistant at SRU for 20 years before taking over the program in 2016. He has been a member of the coaching staff for 13 of SRU's 20 PSAC West titles. Lutz played tight end at West Virginia University, graduating in 1996, and earned a master's degree in sport management from SRU in 2003.

Gary Dunn is in his ninth year (eighth season) as the head coach at his Alma Mater, where he owns an impressive 66-23 record. Dunn, who played for the Vulcans from 1991-94 before embarking on his coaching career, has led Cal to a winning record in every year he has been head coach with NCAA Playoff appearances in 2017, 2018 and 2024. Prior to returning to Cal, he spent six seasons as the offensive coordinator at Duquesne and 11 years as an assistant at Morehead State.

NATIONAL RANKINGS
Slippery Rock closed the regular season ranked No. 11 in the AFCA Division II national rankings and No. 12 in the D2football.com media poll. California was ranked No. 20 in the final AFCA poll and No. 18 in the D2football.com poll. Both national polls are available on page nine of the PDF notes linked above.

CAL QUICK HITS
• Cal is 10-2 to mark the seventh 10-win season in program history with all seven coming since 2007.
• Cal is making its eighth appearance in the Division II Playoffs, its first since 2017 and its third under current head coach Gary Dunn (2016, 2017, 2024).
• This will mark the first quarterfinals appearance for Cal since a 2016 loss to Shepherd. The Vulcans are 3-1 all-time in the quarterfinals with three straight wins from 2007-09 and are looking for their first semifinal appearance since 2009.
• Cal won its first two playoff games with late comebacks by a combined four points with a 30-27 win over East Stroudsburg in the first round and a 34-33 win over Ashland in round two.
• Cal is scoring 28.5 points per game and putting up 386.6 total yards per game with 241.8 passing yards and 144.8 rushing yards. Opponents score 20.1 points per game with 337.2 yards of offense per game, including 221.4 passing yards and 115.8 rushing yards per game.
• The Vulcans are one of the most efficient offenses in the nation on third down, converting 49% of their third downs.

• PK Anthony Beitko is among the most accurate active kickers in Division II and is 9-for-12 on FG kicks this year, including a game-winner at the buzzer in the first round against ESU.

UPSETTING THE TOP SEED AGAIN
Slippery Rock went on the road and upset the undefeated No. 1 seed in the second round of the playoffs for the second year in a row. Last fall, The Rock went to 11-0 Tiffin in the second round and came away with a win. This year, SRU followed up by going on the road to 11-0 Kutztown and upsetting the Golden Bears.

SRU BACK IN THE QUARTERFINALS
Slippery Rock reaches at least the quarterfinal round of an NCAA Playoff for the eighth time in program history. The Rock are in the quarters for the second straight season, the fourth time in the last six seasons and the fifth time since 2015. A victory this week would send SRU to the semifinals for the first time since 2019 and the fourth time in program history (1974 in D3, 1998, 2019). The Rock have never advanced beyond the national semifinals.

PSAC WEST GUARANTEED SPOT IN SEMIS
After the dust settled last week, the only two teams remaining in the Super Region One bracket are PSAC West rivals Slippery Rock and California (Pa.), guaranteeing the PSAC West will send a team to the national semifinals.

FIRST ALL PSAC WEST QUARTERFINAL
This will mark the first time in the current NCAA Playoff format that any two teams from the PSAC West will meet in the regional final. The Rock have only ever played one NCAA Playoff Game against a team from the PSAC West with a loss to Indiana (Pa.) in the 1999 playoffs.

ONE-POINT WINS FOR BOTH TEAMS LAST WEEK
Both of these teams earned dramatic one-point victories last week to advance to the quarterfinal round. The Rock knocked off previously undefeated PSAC champion Kutztown with a daring two-point conversion in overtime to win 25-24 on the road. California (Pa.) trailed unseeded Ashland by 12 points in the fourth quarter, but rallied with two late TD drives and then came up with a pair of interceptions in the closing minutes to earn a 34-33 comeback win over the Eagles.

2.8 POINT MARGIN OF VICTORY IN SUPER REGION ONE
The one-point wins last week in both Super Region One games continued a trend of stellar postseason games in the top portion of the bracket with every game in Super Region One being decided by seven points or less through the opening two rounds. The combined average margin of victory in the five games played in Super Region One so far is just 2.8 points. The Rock's 14-7 win over New Haven in round one is the largest margin in any game with all four other games being decided by three points or less.

CLOSE GAMES IN THE DIVISION II PLAYOFFS
In total, 10 of the 20 games played so far in the Division II Playoffs have been decided by three points or less and 13 of the 20 have been decided by seven points or fewer.

WHO'S LEFT?
This tournament has been rough on higher seeds with only two No. 1 seeds and no No. 2 seeds reaching the quarterfinals. Super Region One is the only region with two seeded teams still in with No. 4 SRU traveling to No. 3 Cal (Pa.). Every other region has at least one unseeded team playing this week. Super Region Two is unseeded Virginia Union at No. 1 Valdosta State. Super Region Three is a heavyweight battle of two of the last three national champions with unseeded Harding at No. 1 seed Ferris State. Super Region Four is two unseeded teams with three losses each as Bemidji State will travel to Minnesota State.

TEAMS WITH ONE OR FEWER LOSSES
Slippery Rock enters this week with the third-best record in all of Division II trailing only Valdosta State (11-0) and Harding (12-1). The Rock are one of four teams with an 11-1 record with Ferris State being the only other team in that grouping to still be in the playoffs after Kutztown and Charleston both lost their first playoff game following an 11-0 regular season.

11-WIN SEASON
The Rock have won at least 11 games for the second season in a row and the fourth time in the last six seasons. The 11-win season this fall marks the seventh season in program history with at least 11 wins and trails only the 2019 (13-1), 2023 (12-2), 2015 (12-2) and 1998 (12-2) teams for the most wins in a season in program history.

LUTZ FASTEST TO 80 WINS IN SRU HISTORY
SRU head coach Shawn Lutz enters this week with 81 wins in 101 career games, moving him into sole possession of No. 3 all-time at SRU and No. 14 all-time in PSAC history. Lutz is the fastest coach in program history to 80 wins and has more wins than any other coach in the PSAC since he took over the program in 2016. Only two men have more wins in SRU football history and those two men have their names on the stadium – George Mihalik (197) and N. Kerr Thompson (126).

BACK IN THE PLAYOFFS
Slippery Rock is making its 12th overall appearance in the Division II Playoffs, its sixth straight appearance and its ninth trip to the national playoffs in the last 11 seasons. The Rock reached the NCAA quarterfinals last year as the No. 4 seed after defeating East Stroudsburg in the opening round and winning on the road at No. 1 seed Tiffin in the second round before falling to Kutztown in the quarterfinals.

PLAYOFF STREAK
Slippery Rock's six straight trips to the playoffs rank as the second longest active streak among all Division II teams, trailing only the 10 straight appearances by Ferris State.

SRU IN ROAD PLAYOFF GAMES
This marks the fourth straight year SRU will play at least one NCAA Playoff game on the road. The Rock are 3-2 on the road in the playoffs over the last four seasons, which includes road wins at the No. 1 seed in each of the last two years. SRU is 5-8 all-time on the road in the NCAA Division II Playoffs with all five of those wins coming during The Rock's current streak of six consecutive playoff appearances.

LAST MEETING WITH CALIFORNIA – OCT. 19, 2024
Cal hit a 65-yard TD pass to Eric Willis III on the first play from scrimmage and never looked back in handing SRU a 28-7 defeat back on Oct. 19 on the Vulcans' Homecoming. SRU lost its first and only regular season game since 2022 and saw a streak of five straight PSAC West titles come to an end because of the loss. Cal controlled the line of scrimmage all day and held the ball for 39:10 to SRU's 20:50 with The Rock going 0-for-8 on third downs. Cal posted a 405-292 edge in offense after throwing for 250 yards and rushing for 155 with SRU throwing for 282 yards and rushing for just 10 yards on only 12 attempts. Brayden Long was 24-of-38 for 282 yards with one TD and one INT. Kylon Wilson caught the TD. Davis Black was 16-of-26 for 250 yards with one passing and one rushing TD for Cal. Willis went for 106 receiving yards and the 65-yard TD strike down the sideline on the first play of the game.

CAL SINCE THEN
Cal went unbeaten through the rest of the PSAC West schedule to claim its first division title since 2016 before losing in the PSAC Championship game 21-14 at home to Kutztown. The Vulcans bounced back after that to earn dramatic fourth quarter wins over East Stroudsburg (30-27) and Ashland (34-33) in the opening two rounds of the playoffs for a total record of 5-1 since playing SRU on Oct. 19.

SEVEN STRAIGHT HOME GAMES
This week's game will mark the seventh straight week that California will host a home game, a streak that began against SRU back on Oct. 19 and has lasted nearly two months. The Vulcans are 5-1 during that stretch with the only loss coming 21-14 to No. 3 Kutztown in the PSAC Championship game Nov. 16.

LAST WEEK FOR SLIPPERY ROCK
Slippery Rock snapped a four-game skid against its newest rival with a 25-24 overtime win on the road at No. 1 seed Kutztown last week. The Rock trailed by eight with under two minutes to play before Brayden Long threw a TD pass to Kam Kruzelyak and then hit Logan Ramper with the 2-point conversion to tie it at 17-17. After Kutztown scored on the opening possession of overtime, Slippery Rock responded with Long hitting Ramper for a 28-yard TD on third-and-13 in overtime. SRU elected to go for two and then ran a perfectly executed hook-and-lateral with Long throwing to Mike Solomon, who pitched it back to Idris Lawrence. Lawrence got the edge and went untouched into the end zone to cap the 25-24 win and end Kutztown's dream season. Long threw for 288 yards with two TD, two 2-point conversions and no interceptions. Ramper caught nine passes for 120 yards and one score.

SRU IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
SRU has been ranked in every national poll since the final poll of the 2018 season was released. This week's game will be the 66th straight game SRU plays as a ranked team. The Rock have appeared in the top 10 in the national rankings for at least one week in each of the last five seasons and have earned a top 10 ranking in seven of the last eight complete seasons.

WINNING WITH LOWER SCORES
The Rock have yet to reach 40 points in a game this fall. SRU had 10 games with at least 40 points in 2023 and have at least one 40-point game in each of the last 19 seasons. The last season SRU failed to score 40 points in a single game was 2003 during a 4-7 campaign.

SENIOR CLASS SUCCESS
The four-year members of the SRU senior class enter this week with a career record of 42-9 with three PSAC West titles and four trips to the NCAA Playoffs. The five-year members of this senior class own a career record of 55-10 with four PSAC West titles and five trips to the NCAA Playoffs. The senior class will depart SRU having played in the NCAA Playoffs in every year of their career. They are the only senior class in program history to be able to make that claim.

HILL NAMED PSAC WEST DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
DE Todd Hill was named the PSAC West Defensive Player of the Year, marking the first SRU player to win the top defensive award in the division since Marcus Martin won it three straight years from 2015-17. Hill led the division during the regular season with 11 solo tackles for loss and currently leads The Rock defense with 69 total tackles, 14.5 TFL, 6.5 sacks, 13 QB hurries and one safety.

HILL NOMINATED FOR UPSHAW AWARD
DE Todd Hill is the SRU nominee for the Gene Upshaw Division II Lineman of the Year award. Voting takes place at the regional level this week with two finalists set to be named from each of the four NCAA Super Regions.

LONG NOMINATED FOR HARLON HILL TROPHY
QB Brayden Long is the SRU nominee for the Harlon Hill Trophy that goes to the Division II Player of the year. Long was a national finalist in 2023 and finished fifth in the voting for the award. He is trying to become the first two-time finalist in Slippery Rock program history. Finalists are expected to be announced in the coming week. The Rock have a total of six Harlon Hill finalists all-time, including four since 2017 (Greg Paterra – 1998, Randy McKavish – 2000, Marcus Martin – 2017, Roland Rivers III – 2019, Henry Litwin – 2021, Brayden Long – 2023).

LONG OWNS CAREER RECORDS IN TWO YEARS
QB Brayden Long already owns the SRU all-time career record for completion percentage (67%) and completions by a QB (587). He ranks third all-time in attempts (876), fourth in passing yards (6,975), fourth in passing TD (58) and fourth in total offense (7,065). He can move up to No. 2 all-time in passing TD with two more TD passes and No. 3 all-time in passing yards with 206 more yards.

LONG CLOSING IN ON MILESTONES
QB Brayden Long enters this week with a couple major milestones in reach. He is 82 passing yards away from 3,000 yards this season, which would make him the first QB in program history to have two seasons with at least 3,000 yards in each season. Long is 25 passing yards shy of 7,000 career yards and can become the fourth player in program history to reach 7,000 yards, despite only being the starter for two years. He is currently 659 yards shy of the SRU all-time program record of 7,634 yards that was set by Randy McKavish from 1997-2000.

BRAYDEN LONG IN THE PLAYOFFS
QB Brayden Long has played in five NCAA Playoff games in his career and is 4-1 while going 118-of-169 (70%) for 1,305 yards with four TD passes and one INT in those games. All five of his playoff performances rank in the top nine in SRU history for the highest completion percentage in an NCAA Playoff game, including his SRU playoff record 77% against Kutztown in the 2023 quarterfinals. His worst passing performance in the playoffs is 61.8% in the 14-7 win over New Haven in round one this year.

LONG HEADING TO VEGAS NEXT WEEK
QB Brayden Long is set to fly to Las Vegas next Monday to be honored Tuesday at the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame Awards Dinner as one of the 16 national finalists for the William V. Campbell Trophy, the top scholar-athlete prize in college football. Long is the only Division II finalist for the award this year and will join major names in the game on stage Tuesday in Vegas, including Oregon QB Dillon Gabriel, Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart and Alabama QB Jalen Milroe, who are all finalists for same award.

RAMPING IT UP IN THE PLAYOFFS
WR Logan Ramper missed half of the season with an injury. Since returning to the lineup, he has changed the SRU passing attack and made SRU much harder to defend in the passing game. Last week, Ramper caught a career-high nine passes for 120 yards with one TD and the game-tying 2-point conversion to force overtime. That followed a career-high 123 yards in the opening round against New Haven, which was the first 100-yard game of his career. In two playoff games, Ramper has 15 catches for 243 yards. He has 25 catches for 426 yards over the last five weeks, averaging 85.2 yards per game during that stretch.

NDC TEAMMATES COMING UP BIG
Slippery Rock added two late transfer portal additions last year after the news that Notre Dame College (Ohio) was closing its doors. The Rock took in running back Idris Lawrence and receiver Mike Solomon from that program and that move has paid dividends all year. Last week, those two connected on the game-winning 2-point conversion with Solomon catching the pass and lateraling to Lawrence for the win. Solomon leads SRU with seven TD grabs on the year and Lawrence leads The Rock with 985 combined rushing and receiving yards.

RUNNING BACK TANDEM
SRU's running back duo of Chris D'Or and Idris Lawrence have combined for 1,446 rushing yards and 431 receiving yards through the first 12 games, accounting for 156.4 yards of offense per game. Lawrence is averaging 5.2 yards per carry on 146 touches with D'Or averaging 4.9 yards per carry on 140 touches. More importantly, they're both healthy thanks to splitting the role nearly dead even this year. They have combined for 6,363 career rushing yards at the Division II level.

LAWRENCE SIXTH AMONG ALL D2 BACKS
RB Idris Lawrence enters this game with 3,818 career rushing yards, which ranks sixth among all active players in Division II and first among all active players in the PSAC. Lawrence is averaging 90.9 rushing yards per game over 42 career games, which ranks ninth among all players in Division II.  His 5.7 yards per carry over 672 rushes ranks 13th best in Division II.

RUSHING CONCERNS IN POSTSEASON
After rushing for 238 yards and 191 yards in the final two weeks of the regular season, SRU has struggled to run the ball in the playoffs. The Rock ran for just 37 yards on 28 carries against New Haven and 61 yards on 31 carries against Kutztown for a total of 98 yards on 59 carries (1.66 ypc) in the two playoff games.

KRUZELYAK PASS CATCHING STREAK
TE Kam Kruzelyak has caught at least one pass in 24 straight games. He ranked third on the team in catches with 46 grabs for 465 yards in 2023 and is third on the team with 38 catches for 313 yards and four scores this year.

FASTEST MAN IN THE PSAC
PSAC 100-meter champion and SRU 100-meter record holder Kanye Thompson (10.27 seconds) was dynamic in the punt return game last week. A starting corner on defense, Thompson had punt returns of 35 yards and 18 yards last week at Kutztown and is now averaging 13.2 yards per return on the season. His 10.27-second 100m time is the second fastest in PSAC history and the fastest time run by any male at any school in the PSAC in nearly 30 years.

MUNCHIE MAKES 51ST CAREER START
DT Munchie Johnson's 51 consecutive starts are the most by any player currently playing in the PSAC and his 51 career games played are the eighth most among all active players in Division II. He trails only Wesley Coleman from Harding (52) for the most games played by active defensive linemen in Division II. Johnson enters this week ranked No. 8 all-time at SRU with 40.5 career tackles for loss, becoming the eighth player in program history to reach 40.0 TFL.

DEFENSIVE LINE TOP TACKLERS ON TEAM
The duo of first team All-PSAC defenders DE Todd Hill and DT Munchie Johnson rank first and second on the SRU roster in total tackles, combining for 129 tackles, 27.5 TFL, 10.0 sacks and 17 QB hurries. DT Trever Valenti is fifth on the team in tackles with 53 stops, giving SRU three of its top five tacklers on the defensive line. DE John Brown also has 35 stops with the four starting DL combining for 217 tackles, 37.5 TFL, 14.0 sacks and 19 QB hurries.

VINCE GETS PLAYOFF STARTS AT LB
LB Andrew Vince started 14 games at defensive end last fall in his first season at SRU. He made the move back to his natural position at linebacker this year, but missed much of the season dealing with injuries. Vince made his first start at the linebacker position against New Haven and tallied a career-high 14 tackles, the second-most in any NCAA playoff game by an SRU player. He added five stops at Kutztown and has 19 tackles through two playoff games.

STOKES AND FAULKNER LEAD SECONDARY
2023 All-Americans Josh Stokes (CB) and Eddie Faulkner IV (S) both picked up All-PSAC honors this year and have combined for 89 tackles, 7.0 TFL, 1.5 sacks, 19 pass breakups, two forced fumbles, one blocked kick and five fumble recoveries. Stokes' 33 passes defended rank No. 9 all-time at SRU and his three fumble recoveries this year are tied for the most in the country.

FRESHMAN TRACKER
Slippery Rock rarely plays true freshmen during their first year on the roster. This year, Division II allows freshmen to play in three games without using a year of eligibility. SRU has played six freshmen defensive players in DE Jett Franz (2 games), DT Amare Harper (1 game), DT Sincere Shannon (2 games), DB Gavin Lutz (3 games), DB/LB Carmen Metcalfe (3 games) and DB/LB Kwalil Shepperson (5 games) while playing one offensive freshman in TE Lou Swartz (1 game). So far, only Shepperson has used a season of eligibility.

WE'VE PLAYED A LOT OF FOOTBALL
Slippery Rock has played 79 games since the beginning of the 2018 season, which is the most games played among all Super Region One schools. The Rock are averaging an impressive 11.0 wins per year over the last five full seasons and 10.1 wins per season under head coach Shawn Lutz.

CAPTAINS
SRU has named six captains for the 2024 season with two on offense, three on defense and one on special teams. The offensive captains are QB Brayden Long and TE Kam Kruzelyak. The defensive captains are DT Munchie Johnson, DB Eddie Faulkner IV and DB Josh Stokes. The special teams captain is LS Josh George. Long, Kruzelyak and Johnson are all two-time captains after serving as captains in 2022 as well.

WINNING SEASONS STREAK
Slippery Rock has put together a winning season in each of the last 15 years, which ranks ninth among all Division II programs for the longest active winning seasons streak in the country. The only other program in the PSAC with more consecutive winning seasons currently is California (Pa.), which has strung together 20 winning seasons after extending their streak this year as well.

UP NEXT
The winner of this week's game will advance to the national semifinals Dec. 14. The four regional winners will be reseeded Saturday night by the NCAA committee with those seedings being announced Saturday. The top two seeds after the reseeding will host semifinal games with No. 4 traveling to No. 1 and No. 3 traveling to No. 2. The neutral site championship game is set for Dec. 21 in McKinney, Texas.
