SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University volleyball team earned its second win in as many matches Friday following a four-set Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division victory over Seton Hill University at Morrow Field House.
After losing the opening set, 25-23, Slippery Rock rallied for consecutive 25-15, 25-18, 25-23 set victories to close out the conference triumph.
In addition to improving its overall record to 10-11, Friday's victory also pushed SRU's PSAC West mark to 3-6. The Griffins leave Morrow Field House at 18-6 overall and 7-4 in league matches.
Slippery Rock registered the important late-season victory thanks to a well-rounded effort that featured three athletes with double-digit kills, three with multiple aces and three with at least four total blocks.
Not only did the trio of
Erica Selfridge,
Callie Chevalier and
Chelsie Wheeler combine to tally 41 of The Rock's 57 kills in the win, they did so on a collective .326 attack percentage.
Selfridge finished the night with a 15-kill, 19-dig, three-ace double-double that also included a .303 attack percentage.
Wheeler was virtually flawless with 13 kills by way of a SRU individual single-match season-best hitting percentage of .545.
Chevalier produced her fourth straight match with at least 10 kills as she collected 13 all the while matching her season-high total in blocks with five (one solo / four assisted).
The Rock's offensive attack also included eight kills by
Kaitlyn Danszczak and five more off the hand of
Lauren VonderHaar.
Jaeden Yost and
Paityn Krause directed the offense with 31 and 15 assists, respectively.
SRU also matched its fifth-best serving outing of the year in the form of nine aces. Selfridge and Krause tied for team-high honors with three apiece with Yost chipping in two aces and
Kara Pasquale serving one of her own.
Defensively, VonderHaar made a match-high six blocks (three solo / three assisted) and in the process hit the 100-block threshold for a second consecutive season – something only three other athletes in program history have done before.
Supporting VonderHaar and Chevalier up front was
Victoria Nalbach, who came off the bench to give Slippery Rock four blocks (one solo / three assisted) in what was her second multi-block match of the year.
Rounding out SRU's top performers was libero
Kate Lachendro-Biery with a match-high 22 digs.
Slippery Rock held advantages over the Griffins in virtually every statistical category including kills (57-46), attack percentage (.232-.145), assists (52-43), aces (9-1) and total blocks (12-7).
Following the opening-set loss, SRU parlayed a pair of big runs over the second and third sets to claim control of the match from the Griffins.
Leading 12-11 early in the second set, Slippery Rock took the next eight points to bolster its lead to 20-11 en route to the 25-15 win. Selfridge had five kills and hit .714 in the set.
In similar fashion as the second set, SRU held another one-point advantage in third set at 18-17 before closing out the set on a 7-1 spurt for the 25-18 victory. VonderHarr compiled two of her six blocks on the night in the third while Wheeler and Selfridge combined for nine of SRU's 13 kills.
Seton Hill kept the fourth set interesting, but ultimately a six-point run from The Rock in the middle stages of the game proved too much for Seton Hill to overcome.
To their credit, the Griffins battled back to cut SRU's lead to one point on four occasions late only for a Chevalier kill to end any threat of a comeback as part of a 25-23 match-deciding win. Chevalier went for five kills and two blocks in the final set of the night.
Paige Cole led Seton Hill with a 13-kill, 11-dig, three-block showing.
Slippery Rock will look to continue its winning ways 2 p.m. Saturday against California (Pa.) at Morrow Field House. SRU defeated the Vulcans in four sets earlier in the season in California.
