Rock falls at No. 5 Gannon, 2-0

The Slippery Rock women’s soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss to No. 5 Gannon University on the road Wednesday.

ERIE, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss to No. 5 Gannon University on the road Wednesday.

The Rock fall to 6-5-4 on the year, an overall record that includes a 6-3-3 mark in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division. The nationally ranked Golden Knights remained undefeated through 2024, improving to an 11-0-3 showing through the season. GU is also now 8-0-3 within the PSAC West.

Gannon found one goal in both halves to secure the two-goal home win. Slippery Rock was led offensively by Skylar Munnikhuysen and Olivia Yoder, both of which took two shots. Sophia Palermo, Morgan Sarver and Libby Zacharyasz also aided in the attack with one shot each.

Leah Allman played the full 90 minutes for The Rock, making three saves in the process.

The Golden Knights found an early spark by taking the match's first nine shots including an 11th-minute goal by way of June Monastrerio.

Slippery Rock's best first-half opportunity came from two back-to-back shots within a 10-second span from Sarver and Zacharyasz, with Sarver's shot getting broken up by Gannon's goalkeeper and Zacharyasz missing high right. The Rock disrupted one final corner kick from Gannon with less than four minutes remaining to hold GU to a 1-0 lead at halftime.

Gannon doubled its lead to 2-0 on its third shot of the second half with Jessie Watkins converting an opportunity in the 58th minute.

Slippery Rock's defense was able to level much of the remainder of the contest from there, holding the Golden Knights off the scoreboard for the last 32 minutes. The Rock intermittently found four shooting opportunities in the second half but couldn't find the back of the net.

Gannon outshot Slippery Rock on the night, 22-7. The Golden Knights also found advantages in shots on goal (5-2) and corner kicks (9-2). Grace Emanuel was GU's top shooter with five, also coming away with one of Gannon's three assists. Morgan Sinan made two saves in net for the Golden Knights.

Slippery Rock will play its final road contest of the regular season 1 p.m. Saturday at California (Pa.). The Rock defeated the Vulcans 1-0 earlier this year at home.
