Rock toppled in 69-46 loss to Kutztown

The Slippery Rock women’s basketball team wrapped up its PSAC crossover circuit in a 69-46 loss at home to Kutztown Wednesday at Morrow Field House.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team wrapped up its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover circuit in 69-46 loss at home to Kutztown University Wednesday at Morrow Field House.
 
The Rock falls to 1-8 on the year, now having begun conference play at 1-5. The Golden Bears claimed their fourth win in five games, moving to 5-7 overall and 3-3 in the PSAC.
 
Regan Atkins guided Slippery Rock's offense with 15 points by making 6-of-10 (.600) from the floor, the seventh time in nine games that she has shot greater than 50 percent.
 
Deryn Moye went 2-of-2 from 3-point range for the second consecutive game to score six points while leading the team with a career-high six rebounds.
 
Kristina Donza also added six points, while Gabby Jackson led SRU with five assists. Kaylin Venick came away with two of Slippery Rock's four steals on the day.
 
Duda Raimundo scored a career-best four points while Kelley McKnight knocked down her first 3-pointer of the season.
 
The Rock found themselves down early, trailing 20-8 after the first quarter due in part to three made 3-pointers from Kutztown.
 
Kutztown opened the second quarter on a 9-3 run before Slippery Rock ended the half by scoring seven of the game's next nine points courtesy of both of Raimundo's jumpers followed by a fastbreak layup from Donza.
 
SRU continued to fall victim to Kutztown's 3-point shooting, which peaked in the third quarter with 6-of-11 (.546) converted. The Rock were able to answer with 50 percent 3-point shooting in the third period, making 3-of-6 by way of McKnight and Moye.
 
After entering the fourth period trailing 51-32, The Rock matched their third period output of 14 points again in the fourth. Kutztown was able to outscore SRU once again though, using 18 points to extend the final tally to 69-46.
 
Slippery Rock shot at a higher percentage than the Golden Bears for the entire game, an effect of Kutztown's 25 missed 3-pointers combined with the Golden Bears coming away with a 44-34 rebounding differential. The Rock went 18-of-47 (.383) from the floor as opposed to Kutztown's 25-of-70 (.357).
 
SRU made 3-of-11 (.273) 3-point shots while Kutztown cashed in 11-of-36 (.306), accounting for 47.8 percent of its total scoring. The Rock made 7-of-14 (.500) free throws while the Golden Bears got 8-of-12 (.667) to go from the line.
 
Kutztown was guided throughout the day by Naia Pulliam's 20 points and five rebounds. She was accompanied by Abbey Hearn, who pulled in seven rebounds and scored all 15 of her points in the first half. Olivia Smelas also brought in a game-high seven rebounds as well as three of Kutztown's eight blocks.
 
Slippery Rock will continue its season by beginning its 18-game PSAC West round robin with a 1 p.m. tipoff Saturday at Seton Hill University.
