Rock loses at Seton Hill, 92-55

The Slippery Rock women’s basketball team lost its PSAC West opener Saturday at Seton Hill, 92-55.

GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team lost its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division opener Saturday at Seton Hill University, 92-55.
 
The road loss drops The Rock's record to 1-9 overall and 1-6 in conference competition while the host Griffins improve to 7-6 overall and 4-3 inside the PSAC.
 
Regan Atkins and Kristina Donza paced The Rock's offensive efforts courtesy of matching 11-point performances. Gabby Jackson finished just shy of the double-digit point plateau at eight. Of the 13 Rock players to play Saturday, 11 ended the game with at least two points.
 
In addition to scoring four points, Kaylin Venick also pulled down a team-best four rebounds while Emily Venick finished with team-honors in assists at three.
 
Seton Hill scored the game's first eight points and proceeded to close the first quarter making 82.4 percent of its field goal attempts, including three successful 3-pointers, on the way to a 31-9 lead through the opening 10 minutes.
 
The Griffins stretched their lead out to as many as 26 points midway through the second quarter before Slippery Rock closed the opening half strong via a 12-7 run to make it a 44-26 contest heading into the break.
 
Atkins scored nine points in the opening two quarters while Donza spearheaded the late run with four of her six first-half points.
 
However, The Rock were unable to carry over their momentum into the second half as Seton Hill opened the third quarter on a 12-2 run re-establish firm control of the game on the way to its eventual 37-point victory.
 
SRU closed the day shooting 35 percent (21-of-60) from the field overall, 25 percent (5-of-20) from 3-point range and 61.5 percent (8-of-13) at the foul line. Slippery Rock scored 18 points off 16 Seton Hill turnovers.  
 
Seton Hill shot 63.9 percent (39-of-61) overall, including an 8-for-17 (.471) showing from distance. The Griffins held a +14 (40-26) rebounding margin over The Rock. Individually, Christiane Frye guided SHU with a game-best 23 points.
 
Slippery Rock returns to the hardwood 1 p.m. Jan. 13 to face California (Pa.) at Morrow Field House. The Vulcans were receiving votes in the most recent Women's Basketball Coaches Association poll.
