SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team earned a 1-0 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division victory against Edinboro Wednesday at James Egli Field.
Â
The victory, SRU's second in as many games, improves its record on the year to 5-2-0 overall and 4-1-0 in the PSAC West while the Fighting Scots fall to 2-3-1 overall and 2-2-0 in league matches. Wednesday's win also keeps The Rock in a tie with Mercyhurst for first place in the PSAC West standings.
Â
The lone goal in the game came in the 87th minute when
Morgan Sarver corralled a loose ball and proceeded to make a short run before crossing a pass to a streaking
Libby Zacharyasz who in turn chipped a shot past Edinboro goalkeeper Kaylee Lauriel into the lower back post at 86:23.
Â
Zacharyasz's goal was her first of the season and second of her career while Sarver's assist was her PSAC-best fifth of 2023.
Â
Slippery Rock dominated possession for the overwhelming majority of the game on the way to peppering Edinboro with 25 total shots, nine of which were on target. In addition to scoring the game-winning goal, Zacharyasz also paced SRU with three shots on goal.
Â
Ashley Rea had two shots on goal as well with Sarver,
Jaime Dermotta,
Sydney Patrick and
Skylar Munnikhuysen placing one attempt on goal each as well.
Â
On a day in which the Slippery Rock defense allowed just three total shots,
Leah Allman stopped both of the Fighting Scots' on-target attempts for her third career shutout.
Â
While The Rock controlled possession, limited Edinboro to just one attempt - which Allman stopped - and recorded 15 shots in the opening 45 minutes, Lauriel was able to save all six of the SRU shots that made it to her to send the game into the halftime break in scoreless tie.
Â
The second half was reminiscent of the first as SRU continued to pressure the Edinboro defense with a variety of shot attempts that the Fighting Scots were able to turn away. Edinboro's best chance at a goal came early in the 68th minute when Megan Malits fired off an attempt from roughly 30 yards out only for Allman to make a leaping save to keep the game scoreless.
Â
Just as the contest appeared headed to a draw, Sarver found Zacharyasz for the go-ahead goal with just 3:38 left in regulation en route to the one-goal win.
Â
Slippery Rock closed the victory with advantages over Edinboro in total shots (25-3), shots on goal (9-2) and corners (8-1).
Â
SRU closes out its three-game homestand when it hosts Clarion 1 p.m. Saturday at James Egli Field.
