Rock plays Clarion to 2-2 tie

Skylar Munnikhuysen scored two goals as the Slippery Rock women’s soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to three games with a 2-2 tie against Clarion Saturday at James Egli Field.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to three games with a 2-2 tie against Clarion Saturday at James Egli Field.

The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division draw moves The Rock's record to 5-2-1 overall and 4-1-1 in league matches while the Golden Eagles leave SRU at 1-5-2 overall and 1-4-1 in the PSAC West.

Slippery Rock was led by a dominant offensive performance from Skylar Munnikhuysen, who scored both of SRU's goals on a day in which she placed three of her five total shots on target. The two-goal game was the first such of her Slippery Rock career. Munnikhuysen has tallied three goals this season.

Ashley Rea, Olivia Yoder and Morgan Sarver all added assists in the game as well. Sarver has now recorded a PSAC-best six assists over SRU's first eight games of 2023 while also being tied for The Rock lead in total points with 12.

In addition to picking up her second assist of the season, Rea also recorded two shots on goal as did Maddie DeLucio. Yoder, Sarver, Bailey McGee and Faith Diffenbacher compiled one shot on goal apiece as well.

Goalkeeper Leah Allman played all 90 minutes Saturday, stopping one shot.

Following a scoreless opening half, The Rock and Golden Eagle found their collective offensive strides coming out of the break as all four goals in the game came in the final 45 minutes.

Slippery Rock took a 1-0 lead in the 51st minute when Sarver sent a perfect pass to the middle of the Clarion zone into a pair of streaking Rock attackers with Munnikhuysen getting to the pass first to place her shot past Clarion goalie Alex Velez.

SRU's lead would be short-lived as Ciara DiMauro pushed Clarion to a lead by netting two goals over the next five minutes on assists by Nicole Brown and Kylee Cross, giving the Golden Eagles a 2-1 lead with 33:28 to play.

However, Slippery Rock promptly put any thoughts of Clarion upset to rest in the 57th minute with a terrific goal. Yoder started the sequence by playing a pass to Sarver who directly headed the ball high in the air to Munnikhuysen which allowed The Rock's junior forward to rifle a looping shot from roughly 25 yards out that sailed over the outstretched arms of Velez for the game-tying goal.

The remainder of the game was a defensive slugfest in which Clarion managed to defend 11 shots and clear three corners. Not to be outdone, Slippery Rock's back line limited the Golden Eagles to just two attempts over the final 33 minutes of regulation including a save by Allman in the 89th minute to finish off the tie.

Slippery Rock closed the game with advantages over the Golden Eagles in total shots (22-6), shots on goal (11-3) and corners (6-1).

With its season-long three-game homestand concluded, Slippery Rock will now take to the road for two matches 3 p.m. Sept. 27 at Gannon University and 1 p.m. Sept. 30 at California (Pa.).
