Rock downs IUP, 3-2

Slippery Rock scored three first half goals on the way to a 3-2 win over IUP Saturday to kick off a three-game homestand.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team scored three goals in the first half on the way to a 3-2 victory over Indiana University (Pa.) Saturday in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference game from James Egli Field.

The Rock celebrated the 30th anniversary of the program with a victory that improves the team to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in PSAC action. Indiana (Pa.) drops to 1-2-1 overall and 1-2 in PSAC games with the loss.

Slippery Rock wasted little time in finding the back of the net when Sydney Patrick scored an early candidate for the goal of the year just 53 seconds into the game. She took a corner kick and swung a towering ball perfectly into the opposite side of the net to put the hosts up 1-0 in the first minute.

Indiana leveled the score at 1-1 in the 17th minute after a penalty kick was awarded for a foul in the box. Hannah Scardina converted from the spot to make it 1-1 at the 16:52 to mark.

Slippery Rock regained the lead less than three minutes later when Ashley Rea fired a shot from the right side toward the goal. The shot careened off a defender, but the momentum carried the ball into the net to make it 2-1 in the 20th minute.

The Rock added to the advantage with a third goal in the 43rd minute when Morgan Sarver took a pass from Brooke Riefenstahl down the left side of the field. She fired in a shot from a tough angle that deflected off a defender in front and found the back of the net. That score made it 3-1 at the 42:40 mark.

Indiana answered and clawed one goal back just before halftime with a goal in the 45th minute. Scardino tallied her second of the game and first in the run of play to send it to halftime with SRU leading 3-2.

After the teams combined for five goals in the first half, neither team would manage to score in the second half as Slippery Rock held on to preserve the 3-2 win.

The Rock finished the game with advantages of 14-9 in total shots, 9-3 in shots on goal and 8-1 in corner kicks.

Leah Allman picked up the win in goal for SRU with one save. Her counterpart, Vanessa Berlin, made six saves in the loss.

Saturday's game marked the first in a three-game homestand for The Rock, which will welcome Edinboro Wednesday at 4 p.m. and Clarion next Saturday at 1 p.m.
