NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team lost on the road to ninth-ranked Newberry College, 4-1, Saturday.
The loss drops The Rock's record to 1-4 overall while the nationally ranked Wolves remain undefeated at 6-0.
Slippery Rock was led on the day by
Bailee Christman, who recorded her first goal of the season via a
Haley Metcalf assist.
Erin Roland and
Gianna Conti rounded out SRU's offensive leaders with one shot apiece as well.
Goalkeeper
Grace Burker stopped two shots over 60 minutes.
Newberry scored the game's opening goal in the seventh minute followed in the second quarter by a pair of goals at 17:02 and 29:28 to give NC a 3-0 lead heading into halftime.
The Wolves added their final goal of game four minutes into the third quarter. Slippery Rock avoided the shutout when Metcalf found Christman for a goal in the 47th minute on the way to an eventual 4-1 Newberry win.
For the game, Newberry held advantages over The Rock in total shots (12-3), shots on goal (6-1) and penalty corners (10-1).
Slippery Rock will look to bounce back from Saturday's result with a win 12 p.m. Sunday at Wingate University.
