Rock rallies for 3-2 win at Wingate

The Slippery Rock field hockey team overcame a two-goal deficit to earn a 3-2 victory on the road Sunday at Wingate. Hilary Hoffman scored a pair of second-half goals in the win.

WINGATE, N.C. – Highlighted by a pair of second-half goals from Hilary Hoffman, the Slippery Rock University field hockey team overcame a two-goal deficit to earn a 3-2 road victory Sunday at Wingate University.

The non-conference win improves The Rock's record to 2-4 overall while the host Bulldogs move to 2-4 with the loss.

Hoffman's two-score day marked the first collegiate goals of the West Chester, Pennsylvania native's career. Grace Maynard accounted for SRU's other goal Sunday as well.

In addition to the goals by Hoffman and Maynard, Slippery Rock also received shots on target from Kayla Del Vecchio, Erin Roland and Haylie Sucharski.

Slippery Rock found itself trailing 2-0 in the first half following Wingate goals in the seventh and the 20th minutes. However, SRU was able to cut into the Bulldogs' lead with four minutes remaining in the second quarter courtesy of Maynard's first goal of the year.

Wingate's one-goal advantage lasted just three minutes into the second half before Hoffman scored her first goal of the game at 33:25 to pull The Rock even with the Bulldogs 2-2. Hoffman went on to post the go-ahead goal with 3:58 remaining in the third quarter.

SRU proceeded to put the game away by silencing the Wingate attack for the final 18:58 of regulation as the Bulldogs managed just one corner and one shot, an attempt that sailed wide of the cage, through the remainder of the contest en route to The Rock's comeback victory.

For the game, Slippery Rock held advantages over the Bulldogs in total shots (9-5), shots on goal (6-2) and penalty corners (7-3).

Slippery Rock opens the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference portion of its schedule when it hosts No. 5 West Chester University 12 p.m. Sept. 23 for the program's annual "Make-A-Wish" game at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
