Slippery Rock finished third overall in the final 2022-23 Dixon Trophy standings and was the highest finishing public institution in the PSAC Western Division.

PSAC Dixon Trophy Announcement and 2022-23 Final Standings

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University Athletics Department finished third overall and second among State System of Higher Education schools in the 2022-23 final Dixon Trophy standings that were announced Thursday by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

The Dixon Trophy is awarded annually after each academic year to one of the 18 athletics departments in the PSAC that has the highest average finish in league-sponsored championships among all sports. Each team in each sport is awarded a point value between one and 18 based on its finish in league championships. Those point totals are then averaged to provide one final score for each athletics department.

Gannon repeated as the 2022-23 Dixon Trophy winner with a final average of 12.66 points. The Golden Knights got an average score of 11.75 points from their eight men's teams and 13.56 points from their eight women's teams that compete in PSAC championship events. Gannon picked up two PSAC titles in 2022-23 in women's volleyball and women's golf. The 13.56 points on the women's side significantly outpaced the rest of the league as West Chester's 13.27 points was the only other women's score above 12.0. The Golden Rams took second overall with a final average of 12.34 points that included 11.60 average points from their men and 13.27 points on average from their women. WCU won four PSAC titles in 2022-23 (men's swimming, women's soccer, women's swimming, women's lacrosse).

Slippery Rock led all public institutions in the PSAC Western Division and finished third overall with an average score of 11.79 points for its 17 teams, which marked an increase from the 11.56-point average that landed SRU second overall in the Dixon standings last spring. The Rock's men averaged 11.93 points to rank second among all men's averages in the league, while the SRU women averaged 11.70 points across 10 sports. The women's average was more than full point higher for Slippery Rock in 2022-23 after posting a 10.45-point average in 2021-22.

The third-place finish is the second straight top three showing for Slippery Rock. The Rock have never finished lower than eighth in the final standings since the award's inception in 1995 and have now finished in the top three six times and in the top five 16 times in the 26 years the trophy has been handed out.

The top five of the 2022-23 Dixon Trophy standings included three schools from the PSAC Western Division and was rounded out by Shippensburg in fourth at 11.35 points on average and California (Pa.) in fifth at 11.28 points on average. The rest of the top 10 included Millersville (sixth, 10.58), Indiana (seventh, 10.55), Kutztown (eighth, 10.43), East Stroudsburg (ninth, 10.40) and Edinboro (10th, 9.82).

Slippery Rock picked up one championship in 2022-23 thanks to the women's outdoor track and field team. The Rock's six "running sports" boosted SRU in the standings significantly with an average score of 16.0 points between both genders in cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field.

SRU also got a boost from a runner-up finish from women's tennis to score 17 points and The Rock football team tying for first place in the PSAC West to pick up 14 points. Other SRU teams that recorded double-digit scores included softball (13.5 points) and women's soccer (13 points), while the women's lacrosse team tallied 9.5 points.
