Whipple sets SRU records in 24-3 win at Edinboro

Camryn Whipple set SRU single-game records for points (12) and assists (10) in leading The Rock to a 24-3 win at Edinboro Wednesday that clinched a second straight 10-win season.

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team locked up its second consecutive 10-win season with a 24-3 win on the road at Edinboro Wednesday in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division game from Sox Harrison Stadium in which Camryn Whipple broke the single-game scoring record.

The victory gives Slippery Rock its seventh 10-win season in program history and marks just the second time in program history that the team has strung together back-to-back 10-win seasons. Head coach Taryn Burkholder becomes the fastest coach to 20 wins at SRU and becomes the first coach to ever lead the team to at least 10 wins in each of her first two seasons.

Slippery Rock improves to 10-6 overall and 6-4 in the PSAC West with the win, setting up a winner-gets-in situation at home Saturday against Mercyhurst for the final playoff spot in the PSAC West. The Lakers held off Gannon for a 12-10 win Wednesday to remain one-game behind SRU in the standings. Since Mercyhurst won the first meeting 13-10 earlier this spring, the Lakers own the tiebreaker should they beat SRU Saturday.

Whipple paced SRU on the attack Wednesday with SRU program records for points and assists, finishing with two goals, 10 assists and 12 total points. Her effort topped the former single-game scoring record of 10 points, a number that was hit six different times by four different players dating back to 1985. It also broke the single-game assist record of seven that was set by both Emily Benham and Jamie DiCarlo in two different games last spring.

Slippery Rock scored the first six goals and was never really challenged in the game. The Rock finished with advantages of 39-8 in total shots, 16-13 in draw controls and 24-10 in ground balls. SRU caused 12 of Edinboro's 23 turnovers and limited the Fighting Scots to just 6-of-16 on clear attempts while going a perfect 17-of-17 on its own clears.

The Rock got goals from 12 different players and finished with 16 assists on 24 goals. Olivia Fox tallied five points on four goals and one assist and Maddie Blazey added three goals and one assist. The Rock also got a hat trick from Brooke Wisniewski and two goals and one assist from Krysta Frankowski.

Ida Modin scored one goal and handed out two assists and Erin Melcher, Charleigh Rondeau and Leora Owings all tallied two goals. Lauren Searles chipped in one goal and one assist and Victoria Ziemba and Ella Koslowski each scored one goal to cap the scorers.

Gillian O'Rourke was credited with the win after playing the first half and recording one save while allowing one goal. Izzie Sutton played the second half in goal and made three saves while allowing two goals.

Edinboro, which dropped to 2-14 overall and 0-11 in PSAC West games, got two goals from Rylee Jones and one From Emma Lamica. Savannah Fisher made nine saves in goal.

Slippery Rock will welcome Mercyhurst Saturday at 1 p.m. with a spot in the PSAC playoffs on the line. The winner of that game will earn the No. 3 seed in the PSAC West and will travel to No. 2 seed Indiana (Pa.) in the opening round. No. 1 seed Seton Hill has a first round bye.

The Rock are trying to reach the PSAC playoffs for just the third time since bringing the lacrosse program back as a varsity sport in 2007.
