NCAA Regional Rankings
INDIANAPOLIS – The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team was one of the six teams from the Atlantic Region to be listed "under consideration" when the NCAA Lacrosse Committee announced its first set of regional rankings Wednesday, marking the second season in program history in which SRU has been among the official regional rankings.
Â
The first set regional rankings are listed in alphabetical order with no numerical ranking. The committee will rank the top six teams in numerical order for the first time with the second set of regional rankings, which will be announced April 26.
Â
The NCAA regional rankings ultimately determine the participants for the NCAA Tournament. The top four teams in each region in the final rankings will earn a berth in the national playoffs. The Atlantic Region consists of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) and the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) and includes a total of 25 colleges with women's lacrosse teams.
Â
All six teams in the first set of regional rankings come from the PSAC with three from the Eastern Division and three from the Western Division. East Stroudsburg, Indiana (Pa.), Kutztown, Seton Hill, Slippery Rock and West Chester are the six teams "under consideration" in this week's rankings, which included all games played before April 16.
Â
Slippery Rock, which picked up a win over Gannon earlier in the day Wednesday, owns a 9-5 overall record and an 8-4 record against regional opponents with three of those four losses coming to other teams in this week's regional rankings.
Â
The Rock have never qualified for the NCAA Tournament since bringing the sport of women's lacrosse back to the varsity level in 2007. The only other time SRU has appeared in the regional rankings was the 2018 season.
Â
Slippery Rock has three games remaining in the regular season, beginning Saturday on the road at Indiana (Pa.) with a game that features two of the six regionally ranked teams. SRU will then travel to Edinboro next Wednesday before hosting Mercyhurst next Saturday.
The lacrosse team is the third SRU spring sports team to be regionally ranked this week by the NCAA, joining the softball and women's tennis teams. The NCAA does not rank track and field teams, but The Rock's track and field teams both rank in the top three regionally by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, giving SRU five spring sports teams that are among the best in the Atlantic Region.
