CALIFORNIA, Pa. – Gabriela del Val del Toro became the 14th athlete in program history to record 100 career victories following a 7-0 win by the Slippery Rock University women's tennis team Tuesday against California (Pa.) at the Roadman Park Tennis Complex.
Â
The Rock's win, their seventh in the last eight matches, improves SRU's record to 13-7 overall and 5-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division. California ends its year at 7-12 overall and 1-5 in league play.
Â
Tuesday's shutout, Slippery Rock's fourth such win of the season, served as final tune-up for SRU which will now turn its attention to a home PSAC Tournament opening-round match Thursday against Mercyhurst University.
Â
del Val del Toro joined The Rock's elite club after earning a second flight singles victory as well as a win with partner
Nuria Martin Lopez in the No. 2 doubles flight. A proven winner, del Val del Toro has compiled a 63-14 (.818) singles record and 37-25 (.597) doubles mark so far in her SRU career.
Â
Making the 100-win accomplishment all the more impressive is the fact that del Val del Toro reached the milestone in just three years, one of which being an abbreviated 2020-21 season that featured just 15 dual matches and no individual tournament competition.
Â
The match itself saw The Rock's freshmen tandem of
Tina Slovak and
Dari Sakhanova open the day by registering their seventh consecutive win out of the third doubles flight following a 6-3 besting of Sierra Everett and Anna Oblock.
Â
SRU's nationally ranked top-flight pairing of
Teddi Isherwood and
Adriana Gonzalez Sanchez, the No. 49 doubles team in all of Division II, then clinched the team point by way of a 6-2 triumph over Leandra Guldimann and Diletta Maria Mungo.
Â
del Val del Toro and Martin Lopez furthered Slippery Rock's momentum via a 6-3 win against Carmen Duran and Maria Ojeda to close out the doubles round.
Â
The back portion of Slippery Rock's singles lineup quickly secured the team victory. Isherwood began the singles portion of the match by tallying a second straight win from the sixth flight as she blanked Olivia Hoin 6-0, 6-0.
Â
Slovak proceeded to wrap up her perfect PSAC West record by defeating Kylie Feltenberger 6-0, 6-1 before Martin Lopez clinched The Rock's team win out of the fourth flight against Duran (6-1, 6-1). The victory pushed Martin Lopez's personal winning streak to a team-long nine matches.
Â
The remainder of the day featured Sakhanova defeating Ojeda in the third flight (6-1, 6-0), del Val del Toro officially posting her 100th victory via a 6-4, 6-1 win against Guldimann and Gonzalez Sanchez concluding the match in a 6-3, 6-3 first flight win over Mungo.
Â
With the regular season now concluded, Slippery Rock will begin its quest for a league title when it hosts Mercyhurst in the PSAC Tournament quarterfinals 4 p.m. Thursday at the SRU Tennis Courts.
