Rock fall 6-0 to Cal before severe weather halt

The Slippery Rock softball team lost 6-0 in game one to California (Pa.) before having game two of its doubleheader halted due to severe weather Saturday.

New/Sortable Box Score SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University softball team lost 6-0 in game one to California (Pa.) before having game two of its doubleheader halted due to severe weather Saturday.

The loss moves SRU's record to 23-16 overall and 14-7 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division while Cal improves to 17-18 on the year and 10-9 in the division.

Game two of Slippery Rock's doubleheader against California was halted, with The Rock leading 3-1, due to lightning and will be resumed April, 20 at a time yet to be determined.

GAME ONE: CAL 6 – SRU 0
Slippery Rock scattered five hits in game one but were ultimately shut down by Vulcans starting pitcher Caleigh Rister (9-6) who struck out 11 in a complete-game effort as part of Cal's 6-0 win.

Rock starting pitcher Kelsi Anderson (13-5) took the loss after allowing six runs, five being earned, in addition to recording three strikeouts over 6.2 innings before giving way to Chloe Sharman who allowed one hit in 0.1 innings of work.

The California offense was led in game one by Carlena Fiorilli who was 1-for-3 with two runs, one RBI and one walk as well as Kaitlyn Achtermeier who went 1-for-3 with one run, one RBI and one walk.

The Vulcans scored three runs over the first two innings before tacking one three insurance runs in the top of the seventh, highlighted by a pair of RBI-singles Madison Lester and Alyssa Rose, to secure the 6-0 Cal victory.

Slippery Rock's best chance at a run in the opener came in the bottom of the fifth with tow outs as Arelle Brown hit a single which move Alyssa Sheely to second with the heart of The Rock's batting order stepping to the plate

However, Rister was able to get out of the jam by striking out pinch hitter Mackenzie Freeman before retiring SRU in order in the sixth and seventh innings to record the 6-0 win.

Slippery Rock continues the final portion of its regular season schedule when it travels to Mercyhurst April 18 for a conference doubleheader with a 2:30 p.m. first pitch. Earlier in the year the Lakers swept The Rock 8-5 and 12-0 at Kasnevich Field.
