Rock ready for doubleheader vs. IUP

The Slippery Rock softball team begins the second half of its round-robin PSAC West schedule when its hosts Indiana (Pa.) Tuesday for a 2 p.m. first pitch at Kasnevich Field.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University softball team begins the second half of its round-robin Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division schedule when it hosts Indiana University (Pa.) Tuesday for a 2 p.m. first pitch at Kasnevich Field.

ALL-TIME SERIES vs. INDIANA (PA.)
The Crimson Hawks have a 78-45 record in the all-time series against The Rock. Slippery Rock has won four of its last six games against Indiana (Pa.) with its most recent being a pair of wins earlier this season on the road that marked its first sweep of IUP since 2019.
 
In the two teams last meeting on March 21, The Rock defeated the Crimson Hawks 7-3 in game one before shutting IUP out 8-0 in game two.
 
SRU's pitching combination of Kelsi Anderson and Alexsa Hurd posted dominant performances allowing only three total hits over two games leading to the doubleheader sweep of the Crimson Hawks.
 
Slippery Rock was also led on the day offensively by Hurd who posted an explosive showing from the batter's box going 5-for-7 with four runs scored, two home runs and eight RBI over the doubleheader.

LAST TIME OUT
Slippery Rock closed out the first half of conference play with a doubleheader sweep of Edinboro in a 4-2 game one victory and 2-1 win in game two Saturday on the road.
 
SRU was led over the doubleheader by Arielle Brown, who went 3-for-7 with two runs, two RBI and a pair of doubles. Anna Villies was 2-for-6 with one run scored and one RBI and Cami Fisk rounded out The Rock's leaders over two games going 2-for-4 with one RBI.
 
Rock starting pitchers Kelsi Anderson (12-3) and Alexsa Hurd (7-2) each earned their fourth wins of the week while combining to strike out 16 batters.
 
THAT WINNING FEELING
The Rock are currently on one of the best hot streaks in program history. SRU has won eight consecutive games which is tied for the third longest winning streak in program history as well as the first time it has swept four consecutive doubleheaders since 2005.
 
Slippery Rock's longest winning streak came during the 2011 season when it won 13 straight contests.
 
The Rock's recent eight-win week saw SRU claim its first doubleheader defeat of teams in five season or more as The Rock earned their first sweep of Gannon University since 2011, first over Pitt-Johnstown since 2015, first of Seton Hill University since 2016 and first against Edinboro since 2018.
 
MARQUEE WEEK
Slippery Rock's undefeated week was done in fine fashion as SRU outscored its opponents by a +15 margin (34-19). The Eight games also saw The Rock belt a total of nine home runs and was highlighted by a season-high of 14 hits by SRU in game one against the Golden Knights.
 
WINNING SEASON WATCH
With 16 contests remaining in the regular season, The Rock are just five wins away from producing its highest win total since the 2008 season when it was 27-17. Its 20 wins this year are already the most since a 24-19 finish in 2018.
 
RING OF FIRE
Anderson (12-3) and Hurd (7-2) combined for a stellar weekly performance in the circle as they totaled eight wins, 76 strikeouts and two shutouts over the week.
 
Anderson enters Tuesday's contests with 72 strikeouts in a rotation high 100.2 innings of work to go along with a 2.36 ERA and .196 opponent batting average.
 
Hurd sports an identical opponent batting average of .196 while having struck out 76 over 62.2 innings pitched to registers a 2.79 ERA. For her efforts, Hurd was named the PSAC West Pitcher of the Week.
 
Chloe Sharman (5 saves, 4.82 ERA) and Claire Zimmerman (7.09) ERA round out SRU's regulars in the circle as they have tallied 18 and 10 strikeouts respectively in 24.2 innings pitched each.
 
ONE-TWO PUNCH
Brown, SRU's trusted leadoff batter has excelled at her job of reaching base to start the order. Brown enters the week with a .462 on base percentage in addition to leading the team in runs scored (35) walks (21) and stolen bases (17).
 
Brown rounds out her stat line with a .307 batting average and 13 RBI.
 
Hurd and Erin Gardner have both seen time in the two spot of The Rock's batting order and have done a solid job of advancing Brown when she reaches base. Hurd leads the team in batting average (.438), slugging percentage (.732), on-base percentage (.480), hits (49), RBI (42), doubles (12) and home runs (7) while Gardner bats .256 with seven runs driven in and a team-high five sacrifice bunts.
 
FRESHMAN FIRSTS
Aubrey Mansfield posted a strong finish to Slippery Rock's undefeated week as she tallied a hit in five of SRU's most recent six games in addition to belting her first collegiate home run against Edinboro that helped lead The Rock to their 2-1 victory.
 
On the year, Mansfield is batting .268 with 13 runs scored, five doubles and 13 RBI.
 
ROUNDING OUT THE ROCK REGULARS
Fisk and Julia Montie round out SRU's regulars in the lineup. Fisk has been consistent as of late as she has registered a hit in five of the last six games. She currently bats .255 with nine runs, and the teams second-most RBI of 18.
 
Montie bats .256 with 11 runs scored, nine RBI and the team's only triple. Montie posted her best performance of the season last week when she went 4-for-4 with two runs, one home run and three RBI against Gannon in game one.
 
Anna Villies hits .291 with six runs The Rock's catcher platoon of Emma Kennedy and Julianna Hutchinson have combined to provide SRU with 24 hits, 10 runs scored, two home runs and nine RBI.
 
SINGLE-SEASON RECORDS
The sophomore duo of Brown and Hurd continue to move their way up the list in multiple Slippery Rock single-season records.
 
Brown enters the week third in walks (21), tied for fifth in runs scored (35) and tied for ninth in stolen bases with (17).
 
Hurd, with 16 games remaining in the regular season, is tied for fourth in doubles (12), fourth in RBI (42), tied for seventh in total bases (82) and tied for 12th in hits (49).

PSAC STANDINGS
Tuesday's contest will be a key test for The Rock as they will face the co-leader of the PSAC West. With half of the conference schedule done, SRU, IUP and Mercyhurst are all tied for the top spot in the division with an 11-5 record each.

LAST TIME OUT
The Crimson Hawks split its most recent series with Seton Hill University when it won game one 3-0 before suffering a 3-2 loss to SHU to close out the doubleheader April 8 on the road.
 
SCOUTING THE CRIMSON HAWKS
As a team, IUP bats .279 while averaging 4.6 runs per game and allows it opponents to score 4.2 runs a game. The Indiana pitching staff has a 4.13 ERA and has combined to strike out 131 over 32 games.
 
In SRU and IUP's meeting earlier this season, Meghan Grill led the Crimson Hawk offense as she went 2-for-6 with one run scored over the doubleheader.
