Highlights

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team improved to 2-0 on the year with a thrilling 17-16 win over Millersville University Saturday in non-conference action from Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

The Rock picked up their fourth straight win in the series against Millersville and tallied a one-goal victory over the Marauders for the second consecutive season to take a slim 12-11 advantage in the all-time series. The victory improves SRU to 2-0 in a season that began earlier this week, while Millersville slips to 1-2 overall.

Slippery Rock tallied the first two goals of the game in the opening three minutes and would lead wire-to-wire with the game never being tied after the first 59 seconds, but The Rock could never build enough of a cushion to make it a comfortable lead.

SRU built its largest advantage of the game at 8-4 with 13:36 to play in the second quarter, but Millersville answered with a 3-0 run in just over three minutes of action to make it 8-7. The Rock pushed the advantage back to three goals three more times in the period and scored twice in the final 29 seconds of the half to lead 13-10 at the break.

Slippery Rock pushed the advantage back out to its largest of the day at 16-12 with 8:21 to play in the third period and 17-13 with 13:16 to play in the fourth period, but Millersville rallied again.

The Marauders held SRU scoreless over the final 13 minutes and scored three goals of their own to cut the margin to 17-16 with 2:43 to play. After SRU failed to extend the lead late in the game, Millersville completed a successful clear and called timeout with exactly one minute remaining in the game.

The Rock defense came up with the game-saving play when Amelia Nitsche broke up a pass attempt in front of the cage and sprung an SRU clear the other way as time ran out.

Both teams finished the game with 33 total shots while Slippery Rock finished with a 31-26 advantage in shots on goal. The only two shot attempts SRU had off-target all day both hit the post. The Rock managed a 23-14 edge in draw controls and a 21-20 advantage in ground balls. Millersville finished the game 12-of-17 in clear attempts, while SRU was limited to 8-of-15 on the clear.

Charleigh Rondeau and Camryn Whipple paced the attack for Slippery Rock with three goals and two assists each. Rondeau also pulled down a game-high 15 draw controls and now has 25 draw controls in just two games this season. She also caused two turnovers and snagged two ground balls.

Ida Modin recorded her first career hat trick with three goals. Lauren Searles chipped in two goals and one assist and Eryn Little scored two goals to cap the multi-point scorers. Little also caused two turnovers and picked up three ground balls.

Olivia Fox, Brooke Wisniewski, Rachel Mahoney and Krysta Frankowski all scored one goal to round out the point scorers for SRU.

The Rock played two goalies in the game with both making five saves. Gillian O'Rourke played the first half and allowed 10 goals on 19 total shots. Izzie Sutton played the second half and allowed six goals on 14 total shots to earn her first career win.

Millersville was led by Liv Genovese, Hayden Corcoran and Ashlyn Simonetti with five points each with Genovese posting a game-high four goals. Morgan Scott took the loss in goal after recording 14 saves on 33 total shot attempts.

Slippery Rock will wrap up a three-game homestand to open the season when D'Youville visits March 8 for a 4 p.m. non-conference game.
