WACO, Texas
– Slippery Rock University football senior Kyle Sheets was named as one of the two first team All-America wide receivers when the American Football Coaches Association unveiled its 2023 Division II All-America team Thursday.

Sheets, a senior from Springboro, Pennsylvania, joined Max McCleod from Colorado School of Mines as the only two wide receivers to be selected as first team All-Americans by the coaches association.

The All-America honor is the latest in a string of postseason awards for Sheets, who was also named to first team All-Region and All-PSAC honors after helping lead Slippery Rock to a 12-2 record and a trip to the NCAA Quarterfinals.

Sheets missed all but three snaps in the season opener before returning in the second week of the season and putting together a career-year over the next 13 games. He caught a team-high 76 passes for 1,186 yards with 17 touchdowns. He also completed a 48-yard pass and pulled down an interception on the one defensive snap he played this season.

His 17 touchdowns rank third in Division II this season and No. 2 all-time in single-season history at Slippery Rock, trailing only the 21 that were caught by his former Conneaut Area high school teammate Henry Litwin during the 2019 season.

Perhaps more impressive when looking at Sheets' numbers was that he also shared the ball with Cohen Russell, who caught 73 passes for 1,114 yards this season. They were the only two teammates in the country to top 1,100 yards and both rank in the top eight in Division II in receiving yards with Sheets ranking sixth and Russell ranking eighth.

Sheets finished his SRU career with 2,440 receiving yards to rank No. 4 all-time in program history. He also grabbed 29 career touchdown passes to rank No. 3 all-time at SRU.

The AFCA All-America team is the first of a handful of credible All-America teams that will be announced in the coming weeks, all of which Sheets will be a strong candidate for.
