Rock downed in exhibition at Youngstown State

The Slippery Rock women’s basketball team fell in a preseason tune-up, 78-32, on the road against Division I Youngstown State.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team fell in a preseason tune-up, 78-32, on the road against Division I Youngstown State University.
 
While the match did not count toward The Rock's overall record, it improved the Penguins, a squad that competes out of the Horizon League, to a 2-0 mark on the season.
 
Team captain Kaylin Venick led the offense for SRU, tallying nine points while shooting 3-of-7 from the field. Endya Robinson impressed in her first outing with The Rock, recording seven points while shooting 2-of-4 from the perimeter. She added three rebounds and one steal, as well as Slippery Rock's lone block on the evening.
 
The Rock threatened YSU early, staying within reach of the Penguins trailing just 11-7 after the opening seven minutes of action. The Penguins switched into high gear late in the opening period, shuddering The Rock on an 11-3 run to create a 22-10 advantage.
 
Youngstown State kept the gas pedal down in the second quarter, scoring the first dozen points. Regan Atkins scored SRU's only points from the floor in the quarter, as YSU extended its advantage to 43-14 by the half, shooting 8-of-9 in the frame of action.
 
Slippery Rock's best window of play came in the third quarter, being outscored just 17-15. Kristina Donza and Gabby Jackson tallied pairings of free throws, while Duda Raimundo showed defensive persistence in registering a steal.
 
The Penguins held The Rock to just three points in the fourth quarter, with Robinson and Deryn Moye adding free throws. Youngstown State added 18 to its tally, wrapping the game up with a 46-point advantage.
 
Youngstown State's Emily Saunders played just 16 minutes but shined bright at home shooting 9-of-10 from the floor, leading the Penguins with 22 points, nine rebounds and one of YSU's two blocks.
 
SRU ended the night having gone 9-of-48 (18.8 percent) from the hardwood and 11-of-14 (78.6 percent) from the charity stripe.
 
Youngstown State, aided by 33 points of the bench, concluded the night shooting 26-of-45 (57.8 percent) and going 6-of-17 (35.3 percent) from the 3-point line.  
 
Slippery Rock will begin its regular season 12 p.m. Nov. 18 when it hosts Ursuline College at Morrow Field House. The Rock defeated the Arrows a season ago on the road, 66-62.
