Rock surges to 2-0 win over Seton Hill

The Slippery Rock women’s soccer team netted a pair of second-half goals to secure a PSAC West victory over visiting Seton Hill Saturday at James Egli Field.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. — The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team netted a pair of second half goals to secure a 2-0 victory over visiting Seton Hill University Saturday at James Egli Field.

The Rock improve their record to 6-3-2 overall, and 5-2-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division with the win while the Griffins fall to 3-6-1 overall and 2-6-1 within PSAC West play.

Additionally, Saturday's 2-0 victory signaled head coach Jessica Giegucz's 100th career victory. Giegucz led Division III Northland College to 11 wins in 2014 before accumulating 89 wins since 2015 with Slippery Rock. Giegucz has won an impressive 65 percent of her matches as a collegiate head coach.

Slippery Rock's goals came courtesy of graduate student Ashley Rea and junior Maddie DeLucio. Rea has now scored three goals in 2023 while DeLucio has posted two scores of her own.

Rea led the SRU offense by tying her career-high of six shots on goal, taking seven shots in total. DeLucio was joined by Morgan Sarver with both players posting two shots on target.

Freshman goalkeeper Leah Allman picked up her fifth career shutout, making five saves on the afternoon.

Slippery Rock held a narrow advantage in the first half, outshooting the Griffins, 7-5. The Rock's momentum slowly fizzled heading into the second half, though, not taking a shot in the final 14 minutes of the period.

Things would change quickly as Slippery Rock came out of the halftime break firing and eventually finding the back of the net in the 55th minute.

Rea received a cross into the box from Sydney Patrick and fired an initial shot that was stopped by Seton Hill's Lindsey Pazdziorko. However, Pazdziorko was unable to secure the ball cleanly, allowing Rea to collect her own rebound and one-time the second shot into the net.

The Rock's next shot in the game would nearly be a replica of the first goal. In the 67th minute, Sarver crossed the ball into the box where it was received by DeLucio. DeLucio poked the ball forward in an attempt to evade Pazdziorko, but the keeper lunged on it, fumbling the ball in the process. The ball was left directly at DeLucio's feet, where she was able to punch the ball through to double SRU's lead.

The Rock dominated the remainder of the match, taking seven shots and six corner kicks in just over 20 minutes while holding SHU to just one attempt, a shot by Kilee Coatney that went wide in the 79th minute, on the way to the two-goal victory.

In total, Slippery Rock held advantages over the Griffins in total shots (18-9), shots on goal (11-5) and corner kicks (11-3). Additionally, The Rock committed just two fouls, a feat not accomplished since Sept. 10, 2022 when SRU fouled two times against Mercyhurst University.

The victory keeps Slippery Rock undefeated at home in 2023 with a 5-0-1 record. The Rock are also now 7-0-1 against Seton Hill in the last four seasons.

Slippery Rock will resume play 4 p.m. Wednesday on the road at Pitt-Johnstown. The Rock defeated the Mountain Cats, 5-0, at home earlier this season.
