FROSTBURG, Md. - Â The Slippery Rock University field hockey team lost a close 1-0 double overtime decision on the road Tuesday to Frostburg State University.
Â
The non-conference defeat moves The Rock's record to 2-8 overall while the host Bobcats improve to 7-4 on the season. Tuesday's game marked SRU's third overtime game of the year and fourth one-goal loss.
Â
Tuesday's game was the second of the season between SRU and FSU: the Bobcats also earned a 1-0 overtime win at Slippery Rock earlier in the year on Sept. 8. Â
Â
While ultimately unable to find the back of the cage, Slippery Rock did close the game with 11 total shots which represents the team's third highest total of the season and most since a 13-shot outing Sept. 2 against Maryville University.
Â
Hilary Hoffman and
Erin Roland each tallied three shots with Hoffman placing two attempts on goal.
Gianna Conti added two shots on goal as well while the trio of
Kayla Del Vecchio,
Leslie Colliver and
Bailee Christman had one shot apiece.
Â
Goalkeeper
Grace Burker continued her strong junior campaign by matching her season-best with 10 saves in addition to the one goal allowed over 77:03 of competition. Burker has now compiled eight double-digit save performances over her Slippery Rock career.
Â
Following four scoreless quarters of regulation, The Rock and Bobcats entered the first overtime period with SRU tallying the lone shot of the first 10 minutes, but Hoffman's attempt was stopped by FSU's Zoe Barnes to send the game into double overtime.
Â
Slippery Rock continued to be the aggressors at the start of the second overtime period with three shots in the opening two minutes only for Barnes to once again fend off attempts by Hoffman and Roland to keep SRU from finding the game-deciding goal.
Â
FSU was finally able to beat Burker via a Paige Leitzel goal early in the 78th minute as Emily Hughes played a penalty corner into Leitzel who in turn corralled a deflected pass attempt and promptly fired a shot from 10 yards out that found its way by Burker for the game-winning goal.
Â
Frostburg State closed the game holding advantages over The Rock in total shots (16-11), shots on goal (11-6) and penalty corners (11-5).
Â
Slippery Rock returns to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference competition with a 12 p.m. Saturday road test at No. 1 East Stroudsburg University.Â
