Rock bested by Edinboro in four sets

The Slippery Rock volleyball team lost a four-set match on the road at Edinboro Friday night in PSAC West competition.

EDINBORO, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University volleyball team lost a four-set match on the road at Edinboro Friday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division competition.

The Rock and Fighting Scots split the first two sets with Edinboro taking the opener, 25-16, while SRU earned a 25-20 win in the second. However, the Fighting Scots denied Slippery Rock of the road victory with 25-23 and 25-19 victories over the remaining sets to close out the win.

Friday's result moves The Rock's record to 11-13 overall and 3-8 in the PSAC West while Edinboro improves to 11-10 overall and 6-5 inside the conference.

Callie Chevalier paced Slippery Rock's efforts against the Fighting Scots by turning in a 14-kill, five-dig, three-block effort that included a .333 attack percentage. Chevalier's 14 kills were the most for a Rock athlete over SRU's last six matches.

Erica Selfridge continued her career-year with a 12-kill, 14-dig double-double. Selfridge, who posted a .235 attack percentage as well, has now tallied 11 double-doubles on the season.

Chelsie Wheeler and Lauren VonderHaar added six kills apiece while the duo of Paige Weeder and Kate Lachendro served two aces each to round out SRU's top offensive performers. Peytan Gullickson guided The Rock's attack with a season-high matching 18 assists.

Leading Slippery Rock's defense was VonderHaar, who had six blocks for what was her ninth outing of the year with five or more rejections. Fellow middle hitter Mary Berger came up with a pair of blocks as well while Lachendro made a team-best 16 digs.

Following its first-set loss, SRU found itself down late in the second set at 18-15. Undeterred from the slight deficit, Slippery Rock rattled off three straight points – two of which came from block assists from Chevalier and VonderHaar – to pull even with the Fighting Scots and force an Edinboro timeout.

The break in action did little to derail The Rock, as Slippery Rock rolled to a 25-20 match-evening win by ending the set on a 7-2 run.

However, Slippery Rock's hopes of snapping its five-match losing streak were dashed as Edinboro pulled off wins in both the third and fourth sets en route to a 3-1 match victory.

SRU erased a six-point lead late in the third set, but Edinboro was able to eventually escape with a 25-23 win before closing out the fourth set – and in turn the match – with a 5-0 spurt for a 25-19 victory.

Edinboro finished the match holding advantages over The Rock in total kills (61-43), attack percentage (.228-.155), total blocks (11-8) and digs (80-62) while SRU claimed a 4-2 edge in aces.

Natalie Pallone had a match-high 16 kills for Edinboro.

Slippery Rock will look to bounce back from Friday's loss with a win 1 p.m. Saturday at Mercyhurst University. SRU defeated the Lakers in three sets earlier in the season.
