SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team scored early and often in a 9-0 shutout victory over Roberts Wesleyan University Tuesday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

The non-conference victory snapped a seven-game SRU losing streak and improved its record to 3-11 overall in 2023. Roberts Wesleyan, which dressed just 12 athletes including two goalkeepers for the contest, concluded its first year as a varsity field hockey team with a 1-11 record.

Tuesday's win was one of the top offensive outings in documented program history.

Not only were the nine total goals the third highest single-game output in program history, but The Rock's 38 total shots marked a new school record while their 22 points (nine goals / four assists) tied the previous SRU high of 22.

Additionally, The Rock's 29 shots on goal were the most on target attempts since SRU had 30 against Mansfield University on Sept. 11, 2013 – a span of 171 games.

Individually, Leslie Colliver scored four goals and had one assist to match Slippery Rock single-game records for both goals scored and total points. Prior to Tuesday's game, Jessie Trube held sole possession of the school record for total points with nine (vs. Frostburg State / 2019) while Trube and Debbie Pluck (vs. Kent State / 1974) shared joint custody of SRU's single-game goals record.

Gianna Conti just missed out on a hat trick of her own with a pair of goals while the trio of Grace Maynard, Bailee Christman and Samantha Karmonick scored one goal apiece with Maynard also assisting on a pair of scores for a four-point performance.

Paige Shannon added one assist for what was her first collegiate point.

Nine Rock athletes combined for Slippery Rock's 29 shots on goal with Colliver pacing the pack with eight followed by Conti (5), Christman (4), Karmonick (1), Maynard (1), Hilary Hoffman (5), Kayla Del Vecchio (2), Erin Roland (2) and Megan Rude (1).

On a day in which Slippery Rock allowed just one shot – an attempt that was blocked in the fourth quarter - goalkeepers Grace Burker and Leah Riegling each played two quarters to combine for the shutout. Riegling's 30 minutes of playing time in the second half served as her collegiate debut.

The last time SRU limited an opponent to one shot came in a Sept. 3, 2016 2-0 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas College.

Tuesday's game was never in doubt as Slippery Rock scored two goals in the opening 3:27 of the first quarter before adding five more scores in the second quarter to take a 7-0 lead into the halftime break.

Colliver began the second half by scoring twice over the opening 3:39 of the third quarter before The Rock's offensive attack relented for the remainder of the game on the way to the 9-0 triumph.

Slippery Rock ended the day holding advantages over the Redhawks in total shots (38-1), shots on goal (29-0) and penalty corners (6-1).

Slippery Rock returns to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference competition Saturday when it travels to No. 3 Kutztown University for a 3 p.m. contest.
