Rock clips Clarion on the road, 2-1

The Slippery Rock women’s soccer team cruised to its third straight victory with a win Saturday at Clarion.

CLARION, Pa. — The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team cruised to its third straight victory with a 2-1 win Saturday at Clarion.

The win improves Slippery Rock's record to 8-3-2 overall and 7-2-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division. The Golden Eagles fall to 2-7-4 overall, now 2-6-3 in PSAC West competition.

Both of The Rock's goals came in the first half, from Brooke Riefenstahl and Morgan Sarver. Additionally, Jaime Dermotta recorded her first career assist. Sydney Patrick added her sixth assist of the year.

Slippery Rock attacked by committee, with Dermotta and Riefenstahl leading the squad with three shots apiece, while Patrick, Sarver and Ashley Rea tacked on two shots each.

Freshman Leah Allman picked up her eighth career win in net making two saves on seven shots.

After Patrick drew a foul in the box in the 36th minute, Slippery Rock earned a penalty kick, which Riefenstahl took. Riefenstahl sent a laser of a shot to the left, sneaking past the diving Clarion keeper. The penalty kick was Slippery Rock's first since Aug. 25, 2022.

The Rock doubled the lead to 2-0 in the 44th minute when Dermotta sent a ball forward to Patrick who crossed the ball into the box, where Sarver redirected it into the net. The goal marked Sarver's sixth of the year and second in as many games.

Slippery Rock carried its 2-0 lead into halftime, despite only taking four shots in the opening half.

Clarion was able to get into the scoring column just 7:26 into the second half on a goal from Kylee Cross. The Golden Eagles would tack on three more shots in the second half, but were unable to find the equalizer.

The Rock fired on an additional 11 shots and five corners in the second half, but likewise were unable to contribute to the scoreboard.

In total, Slippery Rock held leads in shots (15-7), shots on goal (10-3) and corner kicks (7-0).

The Rock will look to keep their winning ways alive 4 p.m. Wednesday when they host No. 20 Mercyhurst University at James Egli Field. The Rock fell to the Lakers, 5-0, earlier this season on the road. Wednesday will also be Slippery Rock's Breast Cancer Awareness Game.
