Rock loses in double overtime to Lock Haven

The Slippery Rock men’s basketball team erased a 15-point deficit with six minutes to play in the regulation, but couldn’t quite complete its comeback bid in an 80-75 double overtime loss to Lock Haven Monday at Morrow Field House.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University men's basketball team erased a 15-point deficit with six minutes to play in the second half, but couldn't quite complete its comeback bid in an 80-75 double overtime loss to Lock Haven University Monday at Morrow Field House.

With the loss, Slippery Rock's record drops to 12-6 overall and 6-6 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference while Lock Haven improves to 12-5 overall and 8-4 in league games. Monday's defeat also snapped The Rock's 13-game home winning streak.

Monday's game was SRU's first double overtime contest since earning a 92-91 road win at Mercyhurst University on Jan. 5, 2019.

Trailing 57-42 with 6:16 left in regulation, Slippery Rock rattled off an impressive 19-4 run to pull even with Lock Haven at 61-61 with 1:11 to play. The run featured five different Rock athletes who scored points including the trio of Ahmad Galimore, Khalid Gates and Jonathan McFall with five each.

SRU forced two Lock Haven turnovers in the final minute of the second half, but couldn't connect on a game-winning shot as the game headed to overtime.

After a scoreless two minutes in the first overtime period, The Rock and Bald Eagles traded foul shots before LHU's Isaiah Stewart scored a layup and converted the accompanying free throw, giving the visitors a three-point edge with 2:22 to play.

Following scoreless possessions by each team, Amante Britt hit a 3-pointer that pulled SRU even with Lock Haven at 65-65 with 1:18 showing on the clock. Britt's big shot would be the last points scored in the opening overtime as both defenses held the opposition at bay to force a second overtime.

Lock Haven scored five consecutive points to open the second overtime for a lead that Slippery Rock was unable overcome. While SRU pulled to within two points on two separate occasions following the decisive LHU run, it couldn't quite come up with a game-tying, or go-ahead basket, as the Bald Eagles pulled away down the stretch en route to the five-point win.

Gates paced The Rock's efforts with a 25-point, nine-rebound, three-block, three-steal, three-assist performance. Britt added 17 points, four rebounds, three steals and three assists while McFall just missed out on a double-double with 15 points, nine rebounds and three blocks.

Lashon Lindsey added six points, 10 rebounds, four steals and a career-high six blocks, the fifth-highest rejection total in a single-game at The Rock all-time. Additionally, the six blocks rank third in Morrow Field House single-game history.

Galimore chipped in six points and five rebounds while Alex Griggs had three steals and Bobby Clifford score four points to round out SRU's top contributors.

Slippery Rock closed the game shooting 35.5 percent (27-for-76) while Lock haven shot 40 percent (30-of-75) with both teams making five 3-point attempts. However, one of the key differences in Monday's game came at the foul line where LHU converted 15-of-20 attempts (75 percent) to SRU's 16-of-27 (59.3 percent) night at the line.

As a team, Slippery Rock recorded 14 blocks, the most in a single-game at SRU dating back to the 1999-00 season. SRU also grabbed 17 offensive rebounds Monday which were turned into 16 points.

Lock Haven had five players score 10 or more points led by Javy Davis, who had 15 points, eight rebounds and four steals.

Slippery Rock concludes a stretch of three games in five days when it hosts No. 1 Indiana University (Pa.) 7:30 p.m. Wednesday on "White Out" night at Morrow Field House.
