Rock and Shepherd play to 1-1 tie

The Slippery Rock men’s soccer team tied Shepherd, 1-1, Saturday in a non-conference contest at James Egli Field.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team tied Shepherd University, 1-1, Saturday in a non-conference contest at James Egli Field.

The tie moves SRU's record to 1-2-1 overall this year while Shepherd claims a 1-1-2 record for the year.

The Rock's offense was paced by Arturo Pla Hernandis who netted his second goal of the season while Ramses Minaya dished out the assist. Aiding the offensive effort by taking at least one shot for SRU were Pla Hernandis (6), Ryan John (3), Alex Plimmer (2), Shaun Spencer (1) and Rafal Wlodarczyk (1).

Hossam Aly made four saves while allowing just one goal over 90 minutes played.

Slippery Rock forced the action in the opening half as Pla Hernandis took three shots in the opening 20 minutes. The familiar Rock forward duo put SRU on the scoreboard when Minaya sent a perfectly placed through ball to Pla Hernandis, who fired a shot past Rams goalkeeper Billy Wood, to take a 1-0 advantage at 27:10.

Meanwhile, the Slippery Rock defense held tough on the other end of the field as the shutout-minded Rock cleared any attempt that came their way, including holding Shepherd to just three shots, to send the game into halftime holding its lead.

Coming out of the break, SRU and the Rams played what was a relatively evenly matched second half. Emmett Harman was finally able to find the equalizer for Shepherd, lofting a shot into the upper half of the goal with 11 minutes left to play.

The Slippery Rock offense continued its attack by outshooting the Rams 7-2 in the remaining minutes of the contest. However, neither team was able to collect a game-winning goal, sending the game to the final buzzer as a 1-1 draw.

For the match, Slippery Rock held advantages in total shots (13-9), shots on goal (6-5) while The Rock and Rams were even in corner kicks (6-6).

Slippery Rock ends a five-game non-conference stretch when it hosts the University of the District of Columbia 12 p.m. Sept. 10 at James Egli Field.
