Rock plays to 0-0 draw vs. California

The Slippery Rock women’s soccer team played California (Pa.) to a 0-0 PSAC West tie Wednesday at the Phillipsburg Soccer Field.

CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team played California (Pa.) to a 0-0 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division tie Wednesday at the Phillipsburg Soccer Field.

With the tie, The Rock's record moves to 1-1-5 overall and 0-1-4 in the division while the Vulcans become 1-2-2 overall and 1-1-2 in the PSAC West.

SRU's offense was led by Jaime Dermotta with five total shots, landing two on goal. Rounding out the shot takers was Kayla Swope tallying three and Ashley Rea with one.

Rock goalkeeper Emma Yoder claimed her third shutout of the season after making two saves over 90 minutes.

The Slippery Rock attack wasted no time controlling the offensive end of the field, firing four shots from three corner attempts in the opening 15 minutes of play. SRU had back-to-back chances at taking an early one-goal lead as Dermotta and Swope narrowly missed with consecutive shots that hit off the crossbar, on The Rock's second corner of the game.

On the other end of the field, Slippery Rock's backline put up a solid showing as it limited the Vulcans to just three total shots over the first 45 minutes, preventing Yoder from having to face a single shot on goal heading into halftime.

Coming out of the break, California became the offensive aggressor, as it had an identical opening to SRU in the first, scattering four shots and three corners in the opening five minutes of the second half of play.

Despite the offensive surge, the Slippery Rock defense settled in once more limiting the Vulcans to only two more shots over the remaining 40 minutes.

The Rock put up the final shot of the contest at 85:48, on a corner pass from Patrick that found the head of Swope but missed just wide left of the goal, en route to a 0-0 draw after 90 minutes of action.

For the game, Slippery Rock and the Vulcans were even in total shots (9-9) and corners (5-5) while Cal led in shots on goal (3-2).  Saturday's is the second time this year the SRU has limited its opponent to just three shots on goal.

Slippery Rock returns home for a PSAC West contest against Pitt-Johnstown 12 p.m. Saturday at James Egli Field.
