SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University field hockey team pushed its winning streak to three games with a 4-1 victory over Lincoln Memorial Sunday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
Â
The non-conference win improves The Rock's record to 3-1 on the season overall while Lincoln Memorial, which was playing just its second game in program history, falls to 0-2 following the loss. Slippery Rock is now 6-2 in its last eight games dating back to last season.
Â
The Rock continued what has been a season-long trend with a balanced scoring attack that saw four different athletes account for their goals Sunday in
Erin Roland,
Megan Rude,
Leslie Colliver and
Bailee Christman with Colliver,
Haley Metcalf and
Kayla Del Vecchio all setting up the scores with assists.
Â
Colliver has now scored goals in each of The Rock's last three games. Through four games, she has totaled a team-high eight points on three goals and two assists. Christman and Roland have now scored two goals apiece while Rude's goal was the first of her collegiate career.
Â
Addy Ross added six shots on goal. Christman (3), Colliver (2) and
Samantha Karmonick (2) all had multiple shots on target as well in the win.
Â
Sunday's result was never in question as The Rock dominated possession for the entirety of the game.
Â
Following a scoreless first quarter, Roland posted SRU's first goal of the day in the 21st minute on a successful penalty stroke. Rude then scored on a Colliver assist less than three minutes later as SRU took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
Â
After setting up The Rock's second goal, Colliver made it a three-goal game when she finished a Metcalf pass at 44:12. Christman pushed The Rock's advantage to 4-0 thanks to a Del Vecchio assist, her third of the year, early in the fourth quarter in the 50th minute. Christman has now scored goals in consecutive games.
Â
Slippery Rock's hopes of a shutout were dashed with eight minutes to play in regulation after the Railsplitters perfectly executed a penalty corner that ended with Katherine Brislin scoring the first goal in program history before SRU closed out a 4-1 victory.
Â
Goalie
Grace Burker played all 60 minutes for SRU, making one save with the aforementioned one goal allowed.
Â
For the game, Slippery Rock held advantages over LMU in total shots (24-2), shots on goal (19-2) and penalty corners (23-1).
Â
Sunday's game also served as First Responders Day for the SRU field hockey program. Prior to the contest Reed McGraw, the son of the late Bobby McGraw, who in addition to serving as the head women's basketball coach at The Rock for the last eight years was also a proud member of the U.S. Marine Corps Military Police and a retired Trooper with the Pennsylvania State Police, took part in a ceremonial pass back to commemorate the day.
Â
Slippery Rock closes out its three-game homestand 12 p.m. Sept. 17 against East Stroudsburg University on Title IX Celebration Day at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
