Rock and Mercyhurst play to 1-1 tie

The Slippery Rock women’s soccer team tied Mercyhurst, 1-1, Saturday on the road in a PSAC West contest.

ERIE, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team tied Mercyhurst University, 1-1, Saturday in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division contest.

The tie moves SRU's overall record to 1-1-4 and its PSAC West mark to 0-1-3. The Lakers record becomes 3-1-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the division.

Slippery Rock's offense was led by Faith Diffenbacher who tallied her first goal of the season while Sydney Patrick dished out her second assist of the year. Diffenbacher ended the game with three shots, all of which were on goal.

Ashley Rea and Kylee Kosek also aided in the SRU offensive pursuit as Rea registered three shots, one of which was on target, with Kosek adding one shot on goal as well.

Emma Yoder recorded a season-high seven saves over 90 minutes while allowing just one goal.

The Lakers forced the action in the opening 13 minutes as they fired four shots before Diffenbacher placed SRU's first shot of the day which was stopped by Laker goalkeeper Maddie Elbro in the 14th minute.

Slippery Rock looked to get on the scoreboard first after being awarded three consecutive corners over a 90 second stretch, but was unable to get off a shot during the run.

Mercyhurst took a one-goal lead when Karah Van Horn placed a ball to the low right corner of the net 29 minutes into the first half. The SRU defense settled in for the remainder of the opening 45 minutes, allowing the Mercyhurst attack to take just one errant shot heading into halftime.

Coming out of the break, The Rock wasted no time knotting the score as Patrick set a perfect corner kick to Diffenbacher, who in turn tallied the equalizer just four minutes into the second half.

The Mercyhurst offense continued their heavy attack following The Rock's goal as it earned numerous chances to score the game-winning goal by way of five corner kick attempts. However, The SRU backline successfully defended every corner in addition to fending off 11 Laker shot attempts en route to a 1-1 draw.

For the game, Mercyhurst held advantages over The Rock in total shots (19-7), shots on goal (8-5) and corner kicks (7-6).

Slippery Rock continues conference competition when it travels to California (Pa.) 6 p.m. Sept. 14.
