Rock edged by Gannon 1-0

The Slippery Rock women’s soccer team was edged, 1-0, on the road Wednesday by PSAC West opponent Gannon.

ERIE, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team was edged, 1-0, on the road Wednesday by Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division opponent Gannon University.

The loss moves The Rock's record to 1-1-1 overall and 0-1 in the division while the Golden Knights improve to 2-1 on the year and 1-0 in the PSAC West.

SRU's offense was led by Ashley Rea who placed both of her shots of the evening on goal as well as Olivia Yoder who tallied The Rock's other shot. Emma Yoder made two saves over 90 minutes.

Gannon scored what would be the game-winning goal in the final four minutes of the opening half of competition when Sarah Fails collected a saved free kick attempt by Sam Dales, before laying a shot past Yoder, to give the Golden Knights a 1-0 advantage they would never relinquish.

Slippery Rock's best look at an equalizer came with 30 minutes remaining in the second half. Jaime Dermotta played a perfect ball to the feet of Morgan Sarver, in motion, before Sarver fired a shot around Gannon goalkeeper Kennedy Solymosi, but the goal was negated by an offsides call.

Both teams ensued a defensive battle as neither teams' goalie was tasked with making more than one save throughout the duration of the second half. However, Slippery Rock was unable to pull off any late comeback as it was held to no shots in the final 45 minutes by the Golden Knight defense en route to a 1-0 Golden Knights victory.

For the game, Gannon held the advantage in overall shots (7-3) as well as shots on goal (3-2) while The Rock topped the Golden Knights in corner kicks (4-2).

Slippery Rock returns home to host Seton Hill University in a PSAC West match 3 p.m. Saturday at James Egli Field.
