Rock falls to Walsh, 4-1

The Slippery Rock men’s soccer team fell, 4-1, on the road at Walsh Thursday night in its 2022 season opener.

NORTH CANTON, Ohio – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team fell, 4-1, on the road at Walsh University Thursday in its 2022 season opener.

With the non-conference loss, The Rock's record moves to 0-1 overall to open the year while Walsh improves to 1-0.

Slippery Rock's scoring was produced by Ramses Minaya who netted what would be SRU's lone goal of the contest after a corner kick attempt in the 69th minute. Minaya closed the night with three shots, two of which were on goal.

Also taking part in The Rock's offensive charge was Arturo Pla Hernandis with a pair of shots as well as Max Murphy and Alex Plimmer with one shot each.

Over 90 minutes, goalkeeper Hossam Aly made two saves while allowing four goals.

The Cavaliers offensive surge was brought on by the trio of Leanardo Louro, who tallied two goals, as well as Jose Rabadan Villanueva and Domonic O'Connor with one goal apiece.

Rabadan Villanueva opened the scoring efforts for Walsh with a goal just two minutes into the match, landing a shot into the low left corner. The Rock defense was able to hold off any further Cavalier offensive strikes for the remainder of the half, including Nathan Kortyna making a stellar save at 10:25, to enter halftime trailing 1-0.

Coming out of the break, the Walsh offense struck once again with Louro scoring two goals back-to-back at 56:10 and 63:07 respectively, giving the Cavaliers a comfortable 3-0 lead over SRU.

Minaya took advantage of a deflected corner kick ball and was able to net The Rock's only goal of the game into low center with 21 minutes left in the second half.

However, Slippery Rock was unable to come up with a response to the deficit as O'Connor went on to add an insurance goal by way of penalty kick that landed out of the reach of Aly, securing the 4-1 victory.

Cavaliers' goalkeeper Charlie Walker made three saves while allowing one goal over two halves. As a team, Walsh held advantages over SRU in total shots (16-7) and shots on goal (6-4) while Slippery Rock led in corner kicks (5-4).

Slippery Rock returns to action when it hosts Findlay in non-conference competition 1 p.m. Saturday at James Egli Field.
