Rock opens homestand with shutout of Edinboro

The Slippery Rock women’s tennis team opened ifs four-match homestand by earning a PSAC West victory with a 7-0 shutout against Edinboro Wednesday at the SRU Tennis Courts.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team opened ifs four-match homestand by earning a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division victory with a 7-0 shutout against Edinboro University Wednesday at the SRU Tennis Courts.
 
The victory snapped a two-game losing skid for SRU while improving its record on the season to 7-5 overall and a perfect 2-0 in PSAC West contests. Edinboro drops to 7-6 overall and 0-1 in league play following the loss.
 
With her singles and doubles victories Wednesday, Lois Page moved into a tie with Dunja Drmac (2009-12) for 10th place on The Rock's career wins list at 111. She is now two wins away from surpassing Janelle Krantz (2009-13) for the ninth most wins at SRU.
 
Gabriela del Val del Toro and Teddi Isherwood set the tone for the day by opening the match with a 6-3 win over Marina Zottele and Maria Salomao from their No. 2 doubles flight followed by Page and Adriana Gonzalez Sanchez clinching the doubles point with a 6-4 first-flight win against Rafaella Almeida and Luciana Ponce.
 
With the team point already in Slippery Rock's possession, Zoe Heed and Georgie Lancaster continued the string of wins by besting Sandra Riecken and Vidisha Pallamreddy, 6-3, at No. 3 doubles for the pairing's fifth straight win.
 
Gonzalez Sanchez and Isherwood proceeded to quickly push Slippery Rock's lead out to 3-0 courtesy of respective wins from the second and fifth singles flights. Gonzalez Sanchez beat Ponce 6-0, 6-1 and Isherwood picked up a 6-0, 6-0 shutout against Ana Nadai.
 
Page went on to clinch The Rock's team victory by way of a 6-2, 6-0 win from the first flight against Pallamreddy.
 
The remainder of the match saw SRU competitors secure three additional wins as Heed defeated Riecken from the sixth flight (6-2, 6-1) with del Val del Toro downing Almeida in third-flight competition (6-3, 6-1) and Nuria Martin Lopez locking up her fifth consecutive win with a day-capping 6-3, 6-3 victory against Zottele from the fourth slot.
 
SRU now has four athletes with 10 or more singles wins on the season in del Val del Toro (16-6), Isherwood (15-4), Page (14-8) and Martin Lopez (11-8).
 
Slippery Rock next steps out of league play for a pair of non-conference weekend matches 12 p.m. Saturday against Goldey-Beacom and 11 a.m. Sunday versus West Chester.
