CHARLESTON, W. Va. -
The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team lost on the road to 23rd-ranked University of Charleston, 5-2, Sunday at the Schoenbaum Tennis Courts in Charleston, West Virginia.

The non-conference defeat moves The Rock's record to 6-5 on the year overall while the nationally ranked Golden Eagles improve to 10-6 following the win.

Slippery Rock and Charleston opened the match by splitting a pair of doubles bouts. AlexiAnn Drouin and Megan William defeated Teddi Isherwood and Gabriela del Val del Toro, 6-3, in the second flight only for SRU to counter with a 6-3 win at third doubles from Zoe Heed and Georgie Lancaster over Barbara Balancho and Katie Swann.

UC was then able to earn the doubles point thanks to Haarini Balakrishnan and Prinkle Singh edging Lois Page and Adriana Gonzalez Sanchez in the first flight, 6-4.

SRU opened the singles portion of Sunday's match on a high note when del Val del Toro earned a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Balancho from the third flight to even the team score at 1-1. The victory pushed del Val del Toro's record in 2021-22 to 15-6.

However, any hopes of a Rock comeback were dashed as Charleston went on to take the next four singles matches to secure the team win.

Singh was a 6-3, 6-1 winner against Page in the first flight while William defeated Heed 6-2, 6-1 from the sixth flight before Swan clinched Charleston's win via a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Isherwood in the fifth flight.

Following a 6-3, 6-4 win by Drouin against Gonzalez Sanchez in the second flight, Nuria Martin Lopez finished out the day for The Rock by rallying to register a 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 win in the fourth slot against Balakrishnan. Martin Lopez's win was her fourth consecutive victory.

Slippery Rock returns home to host Edinboro University for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division match 4 p.m. April 6 at the SRU Tennis Courts.
