Seniors hit milestones in 15-8 win over Lock Haven

Emily Benham tied the SRU record for single-game scoring with 10 points and scored her 100th career goal and Katie Dlugosz tallied her 100th career point as SRU took down Lock Haven 15-8 Wednesday to lock up the sixth 10-win season in program history.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team won a third straight game and reached double-digit wins on the season with a convincing 15-8 victory over Lock Haven Wednesday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division game from Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

The Rock got some redemption after suffering a 19-14 loss on the road at Lock Haven back on April 2 and led wire-to-wire Wednesday night for a comfortable win. The victory improves SRU to 10-6 overall and 6-5 in PSAC West play with one game remaining in the season, while Lock Haven drops to 7-8 overall and 4-7 in PSAC games.

Wednesday's win was just the fifth win for SRU over Lock Haven in 42 all-time meetings between the teams. It guarantees The Rock of their first 10+ win season since 2018 and locks up just the sixth 10-win season in program history. Interim head coach Taryn Burkholder becomes the fourth head coach in program history to lead a team to 10 wins in a season and just the second to do it in her first year leading the program. After posting a 5-7 record in 2021, Burkholder's squad has already doubled its win total this spring.

Slippery Rock's seniors continued the trend in recent games of racking up records and reaching career milestones with Wednesday's performance.

Emily Benham matched her own single-game record with 10 points to lead SRU with six goals and four assists. She also scored her 100th career goal to become just the 10th player in program history to reach that milestone. She has already set the SRU single-season records for assists (36) and points (84) this spring and now has 162 career points to move up to fifth in career scoring at The Rock.

Fellow senior Katie Dlugosz entered the game four points shy of reaching the 100-career point milestone and finished her night with three goals and one assist to land right on the number, becoming the third SRU player this spring to reach 100 career points. Junior Jamie DiCarlo, who will graduate early this spring, hit the milestone last week. DiCarlo added one goal and two assists Wednesday and now has 58 points on the year, ranking ninth on the single-season ledger at SRU. Dlugosz ranks 13th in single-season points with her 54 this spring.

Eryn Little scored two goals and Rachel Mahoney, Brooke Wisniewski and Emily Mox each scored one goal to cap the point scorers for SRU.

The Rock defense tallied 16 caused turnovers and pressured Lock Haven into seven failed clear attempts. Amelia Nitsche and Charleigh Rondeau each recorded three caused turnovers, while Nitsche also grabbed five ground balls and Rondeau came down with seven draw controls. Hailey Ohlsen, Sara Danowski and Taylor Baiers all had two caused turnovers as well.

Gillian O'Rourke had a strong game in goal, holding Lock Haven to just 2-of-8 on free position attempts and finishing with 13 saves to improve to 10-6 on the year.

Lock Haven got five goals from Krysta Reading and one goal and two assists from Caitlin Morrow. Lauren Girardi made five saves in a losing effort in goal.

Wednesday's game marked the opening to the final week of the season for Slippery Rock, which will close the year Saturday with a 1 p.m. home game against Indiana (Pa.). The Rock will honor their seven senior players in a short pregame ceremony for Senior Day before the opening draw.
