Regional Rankings
 
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University baseball team was ranked second in the Atlantic Region by the NCAA, the organization announced Wednesday in its first regional poll of the season.
 
The NCAA regional rankings are the most important rankings in all of Division II baseball as they determine the participants for the NCAA Tournament. The Atlantic Region consists of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) and the Mountain East Conference (MEC) as well as independent schools Virginia State and Bluefield State.
 
Conference tournament champions from MEC and PSAC receive an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament with the next five highest ranked teams in the final regional rankings receiving at-large bids. Updated regional rankings will be released every Wednesday until the conclusion of the season with the unveiling of the 2022 NCAA Tournament bracket coming 10 p.m. on May 15.
 
West Chester University topped the initial set of regional rankings with a 24-9 in-region record followed in the top five by The Rock (27-9), Gannon (22-9), Millersville (31-11) and Seton Hill (23-11). Making up the remainder of the regional rankings were Mercyhurst (25-11) in sixth with California (25-14), East Stroudsburg (29-13) and Charleston (27-12) in ninth.
 
Only games through April 24 were taken in consideration in Wednesday's rankings.
 
Following its win against Lock Haven on Tuesday, which will be accounted for in the next set of regional rankings, Slippery Rock has won 10 straight games to improve its overall record in 2022 to 28-9. SRU is also tied for first place in the PSAC West standings with a conference mark of 13-7.
 
Slippery Rock now turns its attention to its upcoming four-game PSAC West weekend series against Pitt-Johnstown. SRU will host the Mountain Cats for two games Friday at Critchfield Park before traveling to Johnstown for a pair of games Saturday. First pitch on both days is set for 1 p.m.
