Rock earns Senior Day win vs. California

The Slippery Rock women’s tennis team posted a 7-0 PSAC West shutout of California (Pa.) on Senior Day Friday at the SRU Tennis Courts.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team posted a 7-0 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division shutout of California University (Pa.) on Senior Day Friday at the SRU Tennis Courts.
 
SRU improves to 12-6 overall in 2021-22 and 5-1 in the PSAC West following the win while the Vulcans drop to 8-8 overall and 1-4 in league play.
 
With its 5-1 divisional record, Slippery Rock has assured itself of hosting Mercyhurst University in the opening round of the PSAC Tournament 2 p.m. April 26 at the SRU Tennis Courts. The Rock earned a 6-1 victory over the Lakers at home during the regular season.
 
Prior to the contest, Slippery Rock recognized Lois Page, the team's lone senior, for her contributions to the program over her career. Page, a 2021 All-American, has won 119 matches over her collegiate career - the seventh most in program history.
 
Friday's match was never in doubt as The Rock swept doubles competition with consecutive 6-2 victories before taking all six singles flights.
 
Page and Adriana Gonzalez Sanchez opened the day with a victory over Carmen Duran and Maria Del Mar Ojeda in the top doubles flight.
 
Gabriela del Val del Toro and Teddi Isherwood followed suit to clinch the doubles point in the second flight against Fallon Winseck and Tedora Iacob while Zoe Heed and Georgie Lancaster also downed Olivia Anastos and Kylie Feltenberger.
 
Isherwood started the singles portion of Friday's bout with a 6-0, 6-1 win against Anastos in the fifth flight for what was the freshman's 20th overall singles victory of the year.
 
Playing in her final regular season home match, Page posted The Rock's third point of the afternoon via a 6-0, 6-1 win against Duran before Heed sealed the team win for SRU by way of a 6-1, 6-0 victory in the sixth flight against Iacob.
 
Heed's win marked her 10th victory of the season. All six members of The Rock's standard singles lineup has now registered double-digit victories on the year.
 
The remainder of the match saw del Val del Toro beat Winseck (6-1, 6-2), Nuria Martin Lopez better Feltenberger (6-0, 6-0) and Gonzalez Sanchez defeat Ojeda (6-3, 6-1).
 
del Val del Toro, who is in the midst of an eight-match winning streak, has now won a team-best 22 matches this season.  
 
Slippery Rock concludes its regular season schedule 12 p.m. Saturday with a non-conference neutral-site match against Millersville University in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania.
