No. 30 Rock pushes win streak to seven with sweep of Clarion

The No. 30 Slippery Rock baseball team pushed its winning streak to seven games with a doubleheader sweep of Clarion Friday in Butler, Pennsylvania.

BUTLER, Pa. - The No. 30 Slippery Rock University baseball team pushed its winning streak to seven games with a doubleheader sweep of Clarion University Friday at Michelle Krill Field in Butler, Pennsylvania.

The Rock opened the day with an 11-2 victory before closing out the sweep with a 5-2 win in game two.

The two wins improve SRU's record to 25-9 on the season overall and 11-7 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division. The Golden Eagles drop to 10-25 overall and 5-13 in league contests following the losses.

As has been the case the entire season, Slippery Rock once again received a pair of great outings from its starting pitchers as both Devin Dunn (7-1) and Luke Trueman (5-2) pitched complete games with Dunn striking out 13 batters. Dunn's seven victories are the most by a Rock pitcher since Alex Pantuso recorded seven wins in 2018.

Trueman and Dunn exit Friday tied for the team-lead in complete games this season at four apiece.

Slippery Rock's offense produced 22 hits over the doubleheader with the trio of Alex Robenolt, Jon Kozarian and Joe Ehland leading the way.

Robenolt went a combined 5-for-9 over the two games with five RBI and a pair of doubles. Kozarian also drove in five runs Friday on a 4-for-8 day at the plate in addition to scoring three times and walking once. Ehland went 4-for-7 with two runs, two RBI and a stolen base.

GAME ONE: SRU 11 – CU 2
Slippery Rock cruised to an 11-2 victory in the opener behind a dominating outing on the mound by Dunn combined with an offensive effort that saw SRU record its 10th double-digit run output of the year.

Dunn did not allow a hit until the fourth inning in the opener. He was virtually untouchable for the entirety of the contest as he closed the game by giving up just three hits and two runs, only one of which was earned, with one walk and a season-best 13 strikeouts.

While he did not need it, The Rock's bats provided Dunn with more than enough runs as they opened the contest with three in the first courtesy of a bases-clearing double from Robenolt before going on to plate two runs in the fourth and three more in both the sixth and seventh.

Five Rock batters produced multi-hit games in the opener. Kozarian was 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Robenolt, Ehland, Abraham Mow and Koby Bubash all posted two-hit outings. Eddie Morris also reached base twice on a pair of walks.

Robenolt closed game one with four RBI while Bubash drove in two runs in addition to hitting his third home run of the season. Connor Hamilton had two RBI to go with a pair of runs scored.

Bryce Grenet (1-5) took the loss for Clarion after giving up five runs on six hits and four walks in 3.1 innings.

GAME TWO: SRU 5 – CU 2
While the Golden Eagles were able to score first in game two, a five-run outburst by SRU in the fourth proved to be too much to overcome in an eventual 5-2 victory.

Joel Spishock ignited The Rock's rally with a leadoff double in the fourth before eventually scoring by way of an RBI-single from Ehland. The inning was capped off with Kozarian belting a two-run single followed by back-to-back run-scoring hits from Robenolt and Morris to give The Rock a 5-1 advantage.

While Clarion was able to get one run back in the fifth, Trueman ensured that there would be no comeback as he worked around leadoff singles in both the sixth and seventh innings by recording three consecutive outs in each of the frames to finish off the doubleheader sweep.

Trueman scattered seven hits over seven innings with just the two runs allowed to go with seven strikeouts all the while not recording a walk in the victory.

Robenolt went 3-for-4 in game two with one RBI. Morris and Ehland also had two-hit games in the nightcap while Mow walked three times and Kozarian pocked a pair of RBI.

Trevor McGee was the pitcher of record for Clarion. He gave up all five runs on nine hits and five walks over 4.1 innings.

Slippery Rock and Clarion conclude their four-game PSAC West series with a doubleheader Saturday at Jack Critchfield Park. First pitch of game one is set for 4 p.m.
