Rock edged by No. 49 West Virginia State, 4-3

The Slippery Rock women’s tennis team dropped a narrow 4-3 decision on the road Saturday against West Virginia State.

CHARLESTON, W. Va. - The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team dropped a narrow 4-3 decision on the road Saturday against West Virginia State University at the Schoenbaum Tennis Courts in Charleston, West Virginia.
 
The loss drops Slippery Rock's record to 6-4 on the season overall while the nationally ranked Yellow Jackets improve to 5-4.
 
WVSU earned the team doubles point following wins in the first and second flights. Chante Malo and Gaya Solomon defeated Lois Page and Adriana Gonzalez Sanchez, 6-1, while Maya Haidari and Emily Moore bested Gabriela del Val del Toro and Teddi Isherwood, 6-3.
 
While it wasn't enough to earn a team point, Slippery Rock's No. 3 pairing of Georgie Lancaster and Zoe Heed were 6-4 winners over Tuva Wallin and Julieta Beltramino.
 
The back half of The Rock's singles lineup all earned solid wins against West Virginia State as Nuria Martin Lopez defeated Maya Haidari 6-3, 6-3 in the fourth flight in addition to wins by Isherwood (6-2, 6-1) and Heed (7-5, 6-3) in the fifth and sixth flights, respectively, against Lea Rolland and Moore.
 
Isherwood's win pushed her winning streak to eight straight matches and her overall record in 2021-22 to 14-3.
 
However, the Yellow Jackets were able to earn the team victory via wins in the first, second and third flights.
 
Solomon bettered Page in the top slot, 6-4, 6-2 while Wallin narrowly downed Gonzalez Sanchez 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 in the second flight with Malo barely edging del Val del Toro in the third flight with a 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 tiebreaker win.
 
Slippery Rock closes the weekend Sunday with another match against a nationally ranked team as The Rock remains in West Virginia to play No. 23 Charleston at 1 p.m. from the Schoenbaum Tennis Courts.
