Records fall in dominant 24-8 win over Gannon

Emily Benham broke the single-season scoring record, Charleigh Rondeau broke the single-game and single-season draw control records, Jamie DiCarlo scored her 100th career point and Katie Dlugosz scored eight goals as Slippery Rock ran away with a dominant 24-8 win over Gannon.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team put together a dominant effort and saw multiple records fall on the way to a 24-8 victory over Gannon University Tuesday in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division game from Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

The Rock got some revenge after seeing a seven-goal halftime lead erased on the road at Gannon earlier this season when the Golden Knights stormed back from a 13-6 deficit to win 16-15 with 12 seconds left in Erie on March 31. SRU jumped out to the same 13-6 halftime lead Tuesday, but left no chance at a comeback by outscoring Gannon 8-0 in the third quarter to blow the game open.

The 8-0 third quarter was part of a larger 13-0 run that stretched from six minutes to play in the second until early in the fourth quarter as SRU took control and put the game into a running clock situation.

The Rock improve to 9-6 overall and level their PSAC West record at 5-5 with the win, which also guarantees Slippery Rock of a winning season under first-year interim head coach Taryn Burkholder. The victory also keeps SRU's playoff hopes alive for the time being. Gannon slips to 5-10 overall and 3-7 in PSAC games with the loss.

Slippery Rock saw multiple records broken during the game Tuesday, with Emily Benham and Charleigh Rondeau both rewriting the record books.

Benham scored one goal and handed out three assists to bring her season total to 74 points, breaking the former single-season scoring record of 71 that was set by Kaytlin Callaghan in 2015. Benham, who also increased her single-season assist record to 32, now leads SRU with 42 goals and 32 assists on the year.

Rondeau broke her own single-game record for draw controls and pulled down 18, topping the 17 she snagged earlier this year against Ursuline. That effort also brought her season total to 132 draw controls, shattering the former SRU single-season record of 118 that was set by Lauren Laubach in 2013. Rondeau also scored one goal in the game Tuesday.

Jamie DiCarlo reached a career milestone on the number after tallying a game-high nine points on two goals and seven assists to bring her career total to 100 points. Her 55 points this season currently rank 11th in single-season history at SRU.

DiCarlo was matched for game-high honors by Katie Dlugosz, who scored a career-high nine points on eight goals and one assist. The eight goals are tied for the eighth most in a single-game in program history (10 three times, 9 four times). Dlugosz now has 50 points this season and is just four points shy of reaching the 100-point career milestone.

Slippery Rock also got three goals and one assist from Brooke Wisniewski, a hat trick from Camryn Whipple, one goal and two assists from Brooke Kelly and two goals each from Molly Buettner and Eryn Little. Rachel Mahoney added one goal and Emily Mox chipped in one assist to cap the scorers.

Hailey Ohlsen and Amelia Nitsche each tallied two caused turnovers to lead the defense and Gillian O'Rourke improved to 9-6 in goal after making three saves.

Slippery Rock finished the game with advantages of 41-14 in shots, 26-9 in draw controls and 15-10 in ground balls.

Gannon got four goals from Caroline Stevens and two goals from Alli Jacobs. Cheyenne Jess made 10 saves in goal.

Slippery Rock will get a rare weekend off this weekend and have a full week to prepare for its final two regular season games. Lock Haven will visit next Wednesday for a 4 p.m. game and Indiana (Pa.) will visit next Saturday for a 1 p.m. game. The Rock must win both of those games and likely could still need help in order to qualify for the PSAC playoffs.
