Rock complete series sweep of No. 17 Seton Hill

The Slippery Rock baseball team took two games from No. 17 Seton Hill Saturday to complete a four-game series sweep of the nationally ranked Griffins.

GREENSBURG, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University baseball team took two games from No. 17 Seton Hill University Saturday to complete a four-game series sweep of the nationally ranked Griffins.

Slippery Rock earned a 3-0 victory in game one before capturing a 2-1 eight-inning win in game two to finish off the sweep.

SRU exits the weekend with an overall record of 23-9 and a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division mark of 9-7. Seton Hill falls to 23-11-1 overall and 9-7 in league games following the losses. This weekend's results marked the first time since Seton Hill joined the PSAC in 2014 that it was swept in a four-game series by a PSAC West counterpart.

As was the case in Friday's home victories, Slippery Rock once again received impeccable pitching performances from its starters as Ricky Mineo and Ethan Edkins were each great for SRU in Saturday's wins.

Luke Trueman and Joel Spishock paced The Rock's efforts at the plate Saturday. Trueman hit a go-ahead home run in the eighth inning of game two while Spishock went a combined 4-for-7 with two RBI and one double over the doubleheader.

GAME ONE: SRU 3 – SHU 0
Mineo was dominant on the mound while Alex Robenolt drove in a pair of runs in a 3-0 shutout victory over Seton Hill in the opener.

Mineo (4-1) was practically flawless on the mound for The Rock as the local product pitched his second complete-game shutout of the season all while allowing just three hits without surrendering a walk to go with eight strikeouts on 94 pitches. Mineo has now given up just three runs over his last three starts, a stretch of 20 innings.

Robenolt led a Rock offense that totaled 11 hits in the opener by going 3-for-4 with one run, two RBI and a double. Spishock and Connor Hamilton each added two-hit games as well with Spishock driving in SRU's third run.

Slippery Rock took an early lead courtesy of an RBI-single by Robenolt that plated Jon Kozarian from second base in the first inning.

The Rock added to their lead two innings later as Robenolt-drove an RBI-double that plated Hamilton before scoring himself via a single up the middle by Spishock to make it a 3-0 game through 2.5 innings.

Seton Hill put baserunners in scoring position in both the fourth and fifth innings, but Mineo worked out of both jams to maintain SRU's three-run advantage heading into the sixth.

However, any thoughts of Mineo tiring down the stretch was promptly put to rest as he closed out the game without allowing a baserunner over the final two innings en route to The Rock's 3-0 victory.

Normally one of Seton Hill's top relievers, Caiden Wood (5-1) was solid for the Griffins in a rare start as he worked around 10 hits with seven strikeouts and three runs allowed in five innings. Jack Laird finished the game out of SHU's bullpen with two scoreless innings of relief.

GAME TWO: SRU 2 – SHU 1 (8 Innings)
Edkins provided Slippery Rock with yet another strong performance from the team's starting rotation while Trueman belted an eventual game-winning home run as SRU closed out the series sweep of Seton Hill with a 2-1 extra-inning win in game two.

With the game tied 1-1, Trueman stepped to the plate with one out in the eighth inning against Seton Hill closer Nash Bryan and belted the first pitch of the at-bat over the centerfield fence to give SRU a 2-1 lead it would not relinquish as Travis Holman would come on in the bottom of the inning and retire the side in order to close out the one-run win.

While The Rock offense left 10 runners on base in the first seven innings, Edkins returned the favor to the Seton Hill lineup as he scattered five hits and a pair of walks over seven innings to keep SRU in the contest before Trueman's extra-inning heroics.

The victory moved Edkins' record to 4-0 as a freshman with an ERA of just 1.80 through the first 20 innings of his collegiate career. Holman's save was his team-leading third of the season.

The home run was Trueman's lone hit of the game. It capped off an amazing series for The Rock's versatile two-way player who totaled four hits in three games over the series while striking out 11 batters over 7.2 innings in appearance as a pitcher versus the Griffins.

Spishock went 2-for-4 with a double while Joe Ehland was 2-for-2 with a walk. Koby Bubash, Abraham Mow and Hamilton all had hits as well in the win.

While Seton Hill put runners on base in each of the first three innings, Edkins was able to work out of trouble in each situation to keep Seton Hill scoreless early on.

Hamilton led off the fourth inning with an infield single before advancing to second on an Eddie Morris walk to get into scoring position for Spishock who proceeded to shoot a single up the middle, scoring Hamilton for the game's first run.

However, the lead would be short-lived as Seton Hill tied the game in their half of the fourth by way of a run-scoring single from Neal McDermott.

SRU seemed poised to re-take the lead in the fifth as The Rock put two runners on base with no outs, but reliever Ian Korn was able to record three consecutive outs to maintain the tie.

Slippery Rock also loaded the bases in the sixth, but was once again unable to find the go-ahead run as the contest ultimately went to extra innings where SRU earned the dramatic win.

Bryan was the pitcher of record for SHU after giving up Trueman's home run. Korn and Brandon Bergert combined to pitch the first seven innings.

Slippery Rock steps out of PSAC West play to host Lock Haven University for an April 19 non-conference doubleheader at Jack Critchfield Park. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
