Rock beats D'Youville 15-12 in Buffalo

Emily Benham, Katie Dlugosz and Jamie DiCarlo each tallied five points to lead The Rock to a 15-12 win on the road at D'Youville College Saturday.

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 15-12 non-conference win at D'Youville College Saturday afternoon in Buffalo.
 
The Rock used a four-goal run midway through the first half to open up 7-3 cushion with 12:35 to play in the second quarter and never allowed the Saints (2-3) to get closer than three goals the rest of the way.
 
Slippery Rock fired 39 total shots in the game and posted advantages of 39-30 in total shots and 16-15 in draw controls. D'Youville managed a slim 19-17 edge in ground balls.
 
The Rock got points from nine different players and multiple-point efforts from four different players. Emily Benham, Katie Dlugosz and Jamie DiCarlo led the way with five points each. Benham scored a game-high four goals and handed out one assist while also grabbing six draw controls. Dlugosz and DiCarlo each scored three goals and handed out two assists and Charleigh Rondeau scored two goals to go along with six draw controls and two caused turnovers.
 
SRU got one-goal efforts from Molly Buettner, Brooke Kelly and Rachel Mahoney and one assist from Emily Mox to cap the scoring.
 
Taylor Baiers paced the defensive effort with four caused turnovers and three ground balls. Gillian O'Rourke made eight saves in goal to earn her second win of the season.
 
D'Youville was led by Marissa Malvaso with four goals and one assist and Paige Cocina with three goals and one assist. Brinn Stworzydlak made 13 saves in goal.
 
Slippery Rock will shift its focus to another non-conference game when Ursuline visits The Rock Wednesday for a 4 p.m. game at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
