SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team opened the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division portion of its 2021-22 schedule with a 7-0 victory against Clarion University Wednesday at the SRU Tennis Courts.

The victory, SRU's third in its last four matches, improved The Rock's record to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in the PSAC West while Clarion drops to 1-8 overall and 0-2 in league matches with the loss.

Wednesday's contest was never in doubt as SRU quickly took the doubles point followed by five swift singles wins to close out the win.

Playing out of the No. 2 flight for the match, Georgie Lancaster and Zoe Heed defeated Alyson Fisher and Josie Beckerleg, 6-0 to open the match. The win clinched the team doubles point for SRU as Clarion did not field a third doubles thus giving SRU the default win from the third flight.

In other doubles action, Lois Page and Adriana Gonzalez Sanchez were 6-2 winners over Alexis Strouse and Savannah Buttery in the first flight.

Slippery Rock went on to end the day with a near flawless showing in singles competition as SRU earned 6-0, 6-0 wins from the first, third, fourth, fifth and sixth flights.

Page bested Strouse at No. 1 singles while Gonzalez Sanchez downed Buttery 6-0, 6-1 in the second flight followed by Gabriela del Val del Toro earning a shutout of Fisher in the third slot.

The back half of the singles contests featured shutout victories from The Rock with Nuria Martin Lopez beating Beckerleg and Teddi Isherwood defeating Allison for her seventh consecutive win.

Slippery Rock will play a pair of key regional contests on the road Saturday at West Virginia State and Sunday at the University of Charleston. Times and exact location for both of the matches are contingent on weather.
