HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team lost to Division I George Mason University, 5-2, Friday at the Chaplin Park Tennis Center in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

With the loss, Slippery Rock's record falls to 4-3 on the season while George Mason improves to 8-3 in 2021-22 following the win.

Slippery Rock was led on the day by the duo of Gabriela del Val del Toro and Teddi Isherwood who each earned singles victories. del Val del Toro is now 12-5 on the season while Isherwood has won five straight contests to improve to 11-3.

GMU took the early advantage after capturing the doubles point with wins from its second and first doubles pairings. Paige La and Hannah Yang first defeated del Val del Toro and Isherwood, 6-3, followed by a 6-4 victory from Grace Hashinguchi and Jackie Nannery over Lois Page and Adriana Gonzalez Sanchez.

While it had not effect on the team score, Savanna Crowell and Emily Wirt also took a tight 7-6 decision against Georgie Lancaster and Zoe Heed in the third flight.

The Patriots proceeded to take a 2-0 lead over SRU following a 6-2, 6-4 win by La against Page in the first flight.

Slippery Rock and George Mason went on to trade points over the next two matches as del Val del Toro bested Grianna Gibbs in the third flight 6-3, 6-1 and Hashinguchi downed Gonzalez Sanchez at second singles 6-4, 6-3 to give GMU a 3-1 lead.

SRU was once again able to cut into its deficit thanks to a 6-0, 3-6, 10-8 victory by Isherwood against Jackie Nannery from the fifth slot to pull The Rock back to within one point in the team score at 3-2.

However, any thoughts of a Rock comeback, and in turn a second win of the season over a Division I team, were dashed when George Mason closed the match with narrow wins in the sixth and fourth flights.

Lauren Splett clinched the win for George Mason by way of a 6-4, 7-5 victory against Heed followed by a 7-6, 6-3 triumph from Ashley Fitz-Patrick over Nuria Martin Lopez.

Slippery Rock concludes its spring break trip with a final match 8:15 a.m. Saturday against George Fox University at the Beach and Tennis Center in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
