HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team opened its spring break trip with a 6-1 loss to No. 16 Newberry College Monday in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

Slippery Rock's record drops to 3-2 with the loss while the nationally ranked Wolves improve to 15-2 on the year following the win.

SRU's efforts were led on the day by freshman Teddi Isherwood who won her match from the fifth singles flight while also teaming with Gabriela del Val del Toro for a win at No. 2 singles.  Isherwood's singles victory improves the rookie's record to 9-3 overall in 2021-22 while she and del Val del Toro are 5-4 this season when teaming together.

The match opened on a high note for The Rock as Isherwood and del Val del Toro earned a 6-0 victory over Rosie Harfield and Ish Singh.

However, Newberry was able to rally back and earn the team doubles point courtesy of 6-2 and 6-4 wins from the first and third flights as Nastassia Chamoun and Zulay Castaneda defeated Lois Page and Adriana Gonzalez Sanchez while Amy Griffiths and Lucy Spice bested Nuria Martin Lopez and Zoe Heed.

The Wolves opened the singles portion of Monday's match with a win at first singles where Castaneda, the No. 37 singles athlete in the nation, downed Page 6-0, 6-3.

Isherwood proceeded to pull The Rock to within a point at 2-1 following her 6-1, 6-3 against Madison Conwell, but any thoughts of an SRU comeback were halted as Newberry closed the contest with consecutive victories from the sixth, second, third and fourth flights.

Spice defeated Heed 7-6, 6-2 followed by a 6-2, 6-4 win from Chamoun over Gonzalez Sanchez that clinched the team win for Newberry.

The match concluded with Singh picking up a narrow 7-5, 6-4 win at third singles against del Val del Toro and Griffiths earning a 6-2, 7-5 win against Martin Lopez from the fourth flight.

Slippery Rock will look to bounce back from Monday's loss with a win against Shepherd University 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Van Der Meer Tennis Complex in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
