WEXFORD, Pa. -
The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team picked up its third win in its first four matches with a 7-0 shutout victory against Ashland University Saturday at the Oxford Athletic Club in Wexford, Pennsylvania.

With the win, Slippery Rock improves to 3-1 on the season while Ashland drops to 1-2. Saturday also served as the first match against a Division II team this season for SRU. The Rock has now won seven straight Division II openers and are 8-3 over the last 11 years in their first D2 contests of a season.

Slippery Rock earned the first point of the day courtesy of back-to-back 6-0 wins from its third and first doubles flights when Nuria Martin Lopez and Zoe Heed defeated Lydia Bice and Alice Adin while Lois Page and Adriana Gonzalez Sanchez, the No. 25 team in the nation, bested Gabriella Hudec and Claudia Adcock.

While it had no bearing on the team score, Ashland's Huntyr Lake and Kortney Reed were able to defeat Gabriela del Val del Toro and Teddi Isherwood in the second flight, 6-1.

Gonzalez Sanchez got The Rock off to a strong start in the singles portion of Saturday's match when she earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Reed in the second flight. del Val del Toro followed Gonzalez Sanchez with a 6-2, 6-3 win of her own at No. 3 singles against Lake.

Page clinched the team victory for Slippery Rock via a 7-5, 7-6 triumph over Hudec in the first flight.

As has been the case all season, SRU continued to receive strong outings from the back half of its singles lineup as Isherwood bested Adin 6-0, 6-1 and Heed downed Bice 6-3, 6-0 from the fifth and sixth flights, respectively.

In what was the longest contest of the day, Martin Lopez outlasted Adcock in the fourth flight in the form of a 6-2, 5-7, 14-12 victory.

Slippery Rock returns to action when it plays five matches over seven days starting with a contest against Savannah State University March 12th to kick off its annual spring break trip.
