Rock loses at Cleveland State, 6-1

The Slippery Rock women’s tennis team lost on the road at Division I Cleveland State Saturday, 6-1.

CLEVELAND - The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team lost on the road to Division I Cleveland State University Saturday at the at Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion, 6-1.
 
The loss moves The Rock's record to 1-1 on the season overall while the Vikings improve to 6-2 with the win.
 
The highlight of the day for Slippery Rock came at third singles where Gabriela del Val del Toro earned her eighth victory of the season.
 
CSU opened the match by earning the doubles point courtesy of 6-1 and 6-2 victories, respectively, from the first and third flights as Sima Heren and Selma Tounsi defeated Lois Page and Adriana Gonzalez Sanchez while Oihane Vicario and Tereze Vevere bested del Val del Toro and Georgie Lancaster.
 
The Vikings also won at No. 2 doubles when Filippa Frogner and Bethany Yauch beat Zoe Heed and Teddi Isherwood, 6-2.
 
Cleveland State clinched the team victory with four straight wins to start the singles portion of Saturday's match.
 
Vicario earned a 6-3, 6-0 win over Page in the top slot with Frogner getting a win over Heed in the sixth flight (6-0, 6-1), Heren downing Gonzalez Sanchez (6-2, 6-2) and Tounsi defeating Nuria Martin Lopez 6-3, 6-2.
 
After losing the opening set to Vevere 6-0, del Val del Toro battled back to pick up 7-6 and 13-11 victories to complete the comeback.
 
The final contest of day came at No. 5 singles where Isherwood lost a close 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 decision to Yauch.
 
Slippery Rock heads to Olean, New York for its annual match against Division I foe St. Bonaventure University 1 p.m. Feb. 20.
