SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's basketball team had its six-game winning streak snapped in a 75-59 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference loss on the road Saturday at Shippensburg University.
Â
The defeat marked The Rock's first setback of the season as they exit the weekend with an overall record of 6-1 and a PSAC mark of 1-1. Meanwhile, the host Raiders improve to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in league contests.
Â
Slippery Rock could never quite seem to find its collective stride Saturday as SRU shot a season-low 36 percent (20-of-55) from the field overall. Conversely, Shippensburg connected on 53 percent (30-of-57) of its field goal attempts, including an 8-for-16 showing from 3-point territory, in addition to holding a +5 (33-28) rebounding margin over SRU.
Â
SRU was led in the loss by
Amante Britt and
Khalid Gates. Britt went for 16 points while grabbing three rebounds. Gates had 15 points, four rebounds and one block. The duo combined to shoot 12-for-25 (48 percent) from the field overall with Britt also going 4-for-4 at the foul line and 2-for-5 from 3-point range.
Â
Jonathan McFall came off the bench to provide The Rock with eight points, a team-high five rebounds and two steals.
Ahmad Galimore and
Alex Griggs grabbed four rebounds apiece as well with Galimore also compiling five points, two steals and two assists.
Â
Shippensburg scored the game's opening nine points to put The Rock in hole they would spend the remainder of the game attempting to climb out of. The Raiders led by as many as 13 points in the first half before a rally cut SRU's deficit to two points at 30-28 with two minutes left in the half.
Â
However, Shippensburg responded by scoring five straight points to head into halftime leading 35-28. Any thoughts of a Rock comeback were further dashed as the Raiders scored 11 of the first 16 points in the second half to stretch its lead out to 15 points en route to the eventual home victory.
Â
Carlos Carter had a career-night for Shippensburg, finishing with 33 points, six rebounds and two steals.
Â
Slippery Rock steps out of conference competition for a final time this season when it travels to Wheeling University for a game 7 p.m. Dec. 13.
