Rock blanks Wingate, 5-0

The Slippery Rock field hockey team picked up its second win in as many games with a 5-0 shutout-victory over Wingate Sunday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team recorded a 5-0 shutout-victory over Wingate University Sunday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
 
The victory, Slippery Rock's second win in as many games, improves SRU's record to 5-3 on the season overall while Wingate, which is competing in its first year as a NCAA program, falls to 0-8 in 2022.
 
Sunday's game was never in doubt as The Rock posted four goals in the first half on the way to their largest win of the season so far.
 
Erin Roland led an energized Slippery Rock attack with two goals and an assist. Roland, who has now recorded at least one point in five of The Rock's last six games, exits the weekend leading SRU in goals scored (5) and total points (12).
 
Samantha Karmonick, Kayla Del Vecchio and Bailee Christman all scored goals as well with Gabriella Delcoco, Gianna Conti and Addy Ross adding assists.
 
Goalkeeper Grace Burker earned the victory for SRU as she played the entire first half without allowing a goal before giving way to freshman Kathryn Denham, who made her collegiate debut with two saves over the duration of the second half to finish off the shutout.
 
Karmonick opened the scoring in the 12th minute with her second goal of the year on a Roland assist to give SRU an early 1-0 lead through one quarter of play.
 
The Rock proceeded to break the game open in the second quarter courtesy of three goals over an eight-minute stretch.
 
Del Vecchio started the barrage at 19:11 when she split a pair of defenders off of a Delcoco feed for the goal, her first of the year. Roalnd and Christman went on to send SRU into halftime leading 4-0 as Roland converted a penalty stroke in the 25th minute while Christman registered her fourth goal of the year at 27:58 by way of a Conti assist.
 
After a scoreless third quarter, Roland added a final score for what was the first multi-goal game of her collegiate career. Ross was credited with the assist on the final goal of the day as well.
 
Slippery Rock finished the game with advantages over the Bulldogs in total shots )26-5), shots on goal (17-2) and penalty corners (20-4).
 
Ross concluded the contest with a game-high three shots on goal. Christman, Karmonick, Del Vecchio, Conti and Leslie Colliver all had two attempts on target as well followed by Nadia Irving with one.
 
Slippery Rock returns to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference competition when it hosts third-ranked Shippensburg University 6 p.m. Oct. 7 at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium in what will be SRU's toughest game of the season to date.
