SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team suffered a 3-1 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division loss to California (Pa.) Wednesday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
Â
With the loss, The Rock's overall record moves to 5-3-8 while their conference mark becomes 4-3-7. The win improves the Vulcans' to 5-7-2 overall and 5-6-2 in the PSAC West.
Â
Slippery Rock's scoring was produced by
Morgan Sarver who tallied her second goal of the year in her debut season. Both
Faith Diffenbacher and
Julia Mascaro ended the contest with one assist.
Â
Also aiding in the offensive efforts with on-target shots was
Ashley Rea who landed three of her four shots on goal as well as
Maddie DeLucio,
Nina King and
Olivia Yoder all placing their one shot of the match on goal.
Â
Emma Yoder made three saves in goal for The Rock over 90 minutes.
Â
California was able to open the game's scoring just 6:01 into the first half when Lindsie Galbreath placed a shot up and over Yoder, taking the early 1-0 Vulcan lead.
Â
Slippery Rock was able to answer just five minutes later when a free kick sent into the goal box by Diffenbacher was grounded by Mascaro before Sarver sent it home to knot the score 1-1.
Â
The Vulcans tacked on an insurance goal before halftime when Galbreath snuck a shot by Yoder to give California a one-goal lead again at the half.
Â
Coming out of the break, the Cal offense got off to a quick start once more with Claire Mercurio netting a goal at 47:37, extending the Vulcan lead to 3-1.
Â
Slippery Rock continued its search to cut the deficit as it controlled the offensive possession for the remainder of the contest, outshooting Cal 16-3 and landing four shots on goal.
Â
However, the California defense successfully defended each attempt, and the Vulcan lead would never relinquish, en route to a 3-1 Cal victory.
Â
As a team, Slippery Rock held advantages in total shots (23-8), shots on goal (8-6) and corners (6-2).
Â
Slippery Rock remains home to host Edinboro 1 p.m. Saturday at James Egli Field on Senior Day as it honors it seven-member senior class for their contributions to the program over their careers. Earlier this year SRU defeated the Fighting Scots 1-0 on the road.
